パリで驚いたこと What surprised me in Paris

パリに小旅行に行ってきました。２度目のパリでは前回長蛇の列のため見学を諦めてしまったヴェルサイユ宮殿にリベンジ。前回の経験を活かしてチケットをネットで事前購入、トイレは済ませていきました。４５分外で並びましたが、無事入場。豪勢な部屋の数々は素晴らしい天井画で装飾されており、見て回るのに首が痛くなりました。


中でも目玉は３７ｍの長さがあり、３７５の鏡で装飾された鏡の回廊。第一次世界大戦後、ヴェルサイユ条約が締結された場所としても有名です。人が多いので順路に沿って回らねばならず、原則逆戻りはできません。途中いくつかの部屋を見逃していまったことに気付いた私たちは、もう一度入口から入りなおして見に行きました。おかげで素晴らしい部屋の数々をまた堪能できましたが、足が棒になりました。

It was the second time I had been to Paris. The last time, we were overwhelmed by the long queues for the famous tourist attractions. Learning from the experience, we revisited the Palace of Versaillies, which previously we had given up going in, only seen its garden instead. This time, we bought our tickets online and relieved ourselves in advance. Waiting for 45min outside, we managed to get in. One room after another, there were lavish ornaments and fabulous ceiling paintings which made my neck stiff.

One of the high-lights was the hall of mirrors, a 37meter-long gallery with 375 mirrors, where the treaty of Versailles was signed at the end of the First World War. Owing to massive numbers of visitors, we were not allowed to go against the flow. So when we realised that we had missed several rooms, we had to start again. That wasn't too bad as we could see the amazing rooms again but made our legs stiff.

ガルニエ宮　The Palais Garnier

ガルニエ宮はパリ国立のオペラ劇場。1861年にナポレオン３世の要請により建築が始まったので、王政が終了してから建てられたものですが、そのきらびやかさな建物と内装は王宮並みでした。

The Palais Garnier is the national opera house in Paris. The construction started in 1861 at the request of Napoleon III. Having been built after the end of the imperial rule, the glittering, magnificient building and interior looked just like a royal palace.

ナポレオン１世の墓があるドーム教会にも行ったのですが、元王家の壮大な礼拝堂が使われているなんてなかなか感慨深いものがあります。巨大な霊廟でした。

We visited Dome des Invalides, the Dome Church, where the Napoleon I's tomb is contained . It was fascinating to see the huge tomb in the imposing church, which used to be a royal chapel.

素晴らしい建物の数々、美術館を巡りましたが、教会以外の場所では、入場前に全てセキュリティーチェックがありました。今年起こったパリ新聞社（シャルリー・エブド）襲撃事件後に始まったと思われます。メディア関係の建物の入り口には銃を持った兵隊さんが警備していました。

We went around several splendid buildings and museums and had seculity checks everywhere to get in, except for churches. It seems to have started after the Charie Hebdo shooting incident this year. There were armed soldiers on guard in front of media buildings.

それとは関係ないと思いますが、サルコジ元首相がボディーガード２人付きでジョギングしているところにばったり遭遇。「ボンジュール」と挨拶を返してくれ走り去っていきました。ジョギングするのも護衛付きなんて大変ですね。

By the way, we came across the former French President, Mr Sarkozy jogging accompanied by two security guards. It must have been a tricky business that he needed guards even for private jogging. Saying 'Bonjour' back to us, he went off.

ヤマザキの雪苺娘 Yamazaki's cake

偶然といえば、知らずに入ったカフェがなんと山崎製パンのお店でした。パリに来てまで日本のケーキなんて・・・と思いながらもせっかく入ったので食べてしまいました。日本で買える倍以上の値段だったけれど、パリだから仕方がないか・・・。

ホットチョコレート　Hot chocolate

パリのカフェで味わった極上品は、ホットチョコレート。ドロドロの液体チョコレートと泡立ったホットミルクが別々に出てきて自分で混ぜて飲むのです。

パリにはたくさんの日本食レストラン（特に寿司屋は多い）がありました。故郷のサッポロラーメンの店を発見した時には思わずうれしくなりました。

Talking of a coincidence, a cafe we went in happened to be one of Yamazaki Baking Co., Ltd., a Japanese bread and confectionary company. I felt a bit crazy to eat a Japanese cake in Paris but I gave in. It was more than doubled the Japanese price. Well, it must be inevitable for business in Paris.

One of the best treats at a Parisian cafe for me was a hot chocolate. They served a jug of thick liquid chocolate and a jug of frothed hot milk seperately and we mixed them by ourselves.

We noticed many other Japanese restaurants, espcially sushi shops. It was a welcome sight for me to find a ramen noodle shop saying 'Sapporo ramen', which is my hometown's taste.

パリは驚きと見所にあふれる街。またいつか行きたいです。

Paris was the place full of surprise and attractions. I would love to go there again.
