What surprised me in Paris

The hall of mirrors
It was the second time I had been to Paris. The last time, we were overwhelmed by the long queues for the famous tourist attractions. Learning from the experience, we revisited the Palace of Versaillies, which previously we had given up going in, only seen its garden instead. This time, we bought our tickets online and relieved ourselves in advance. Waiting for 45min outside, we managed to get in. One room after another, there were lavish ornaments and fabulous ceiling paintings which made my neck stiff.

One of the high-lights was the hall of mirrors, a 37meter-long gallery with 375 mirrors, where the treaty of Versailles was signed at the end of the First World War. Owing to massive numbers of visitors, we were not allowed to go against the flow. So when we realised that we had missed several rooms, we had to start again. That wasn't too bad as we could see the amazing rooms again but made our legs stiff.

The Palais Garnier

The Palais Garnier is the national opera house in Paris. The construction started in 1861 at the request of Napoleon III. Having been built after the end of the imperial rule, the glittering, magnificient building and interior looked just like a royal palace.

We visited Dome des Invalides, the Dome Church, where the Napoleon I's tomb is contained . It was fascinating to see the huge tomb in the imposing church, which used to be a royal chapel.

Napoleon I's tomb

We went around several splendid buildings and museums and had seculity checks everywhere to get in, except for churches. It seems to have started after the Charie Hebdo shooting incident this year. There were armed soldiers on guard in front of media buildings.

By the way, we came across the former French President, Mr Sarkozy jogging accompanied by two security guards. It must have been a tricky business that he needed guards even for private jogging. Saying 'Bonjour' back to us, he went off.

Yamazaki's cake

Hot chocolate

Sapporo ramen shop
Talking of a coincidence, a cafe we went in happened to be one of Yamazaki Baking Co., Ltd., a Japanese bread and confectionary company. I felt a bit crazy to eat a Japanese cake in Paris but I gave in. It was more than doubled the Japanese price. Well, it must be inevitable for business in Paris.

An eclair bench
One of the best treats at a Parisian cafe for me was a hot chocolate. They served a jug of thick liquid chocolate and a jug of frothed hot milk seperately and we mixed them by ourselves.

We noticed many other Japanese restaurants, espcially sushi shops. It was a welcome sight for me to find a ramen noodle shop saying 'Sapporo ramen', which is my hometown's taste.

The Louvre at night

Paris was the place full of surprise and attractions. I would love to go there again.

Parish closes

St-Thegonnec

We went to see so-called parish closes. They are characteristic rural religious architecture in Brittany, built during the 16th-18th centuries. A parish close normally contains a church, a calvary, an ossuary, a cemetery and a triumphal gate. It is a church complex enclosed by a wall, so as to speak.
Calvary in Guimiliau

The calvary is unique to Brittany and provides a walk-around Bible lesson. The Guimiliau's calvary has almost 200 figures. Stained glass windows often depict Bible stories, which was for the illiterate masses, but I hadn't seen that type of storyteller before.

Altarpiece in Lampaul-Guimiliau
To be honest, I didn't expect to see such elaborate works in the rural areas. All the three parish closes we went -Guimiliau, Lampaul-Guimiliau, St-Thegonnec- were remarkable.

At that time, Brittany had few urban centres but many wealthy settlements which profited from maritime trading and the manufacture of cloth. Not only spiritual zeal, but also rivalry with their neighbours drove small villages to painstakingly build such structures. Some took over 200 years to complete. Tremendous.

Emerald Coast

We headed to Côte d'Emeraude, the Emerald Coast in north Brittany. This attractive name was invented a century ago to refer to the stretch of coast between the bays of Mont-St-Michel and St-Brieuc.

Our first stop was Erquy, where we chanced upon a riding competition held on the extensive sandy beach. We mingled with the spectators, watching the elegant horses with the blue sea in the background for a little while.

Then we drove along the coast and found a fabulous coastal footpath. The scenery was just breathtaking. There were several gorgeous sandy beaches under our eyes. We brought our swimwear with us, of course. The water was a bit chilly, or I could say, very refreshing. Nevertheless, we were blessed with sunshine, which was warm enough for swimming at the end of September.

Someday, I would like to go along all the Emerald Coast.

Carnac Stones

Carnac is a small village in southern Brittany with more than 3000 prehistoric standing stones. The Carnac Stones were erected during the Neolithic period which lasted 4500 BC to 2000 BC. It's difficult to date, but most were thought to be erected around 3300 BC. Their original purpose remains obscure.

Besides the famous alignments, parallel rows of menhirs (standing stones) stretching more than one kilometer, there were many other Megalithic sites around the area, such as dolmen, which were used as burial chambers. I hadn't even heard of Carnac but those sites were quite awe-inspiring.

Pau and Biarritz

We drove across the Pyrenees to France and stayed in Pau. Pau is the capital of the Bearn region and has been a favourite resort of affluent foreigners, especially the English, since the 19th century, owing to the mild weather in autumn and winter.

We visited Châteaux de Pau, which is famous as the birthplace of King Henry IV of France and Navarra(1553-1610). He was instrumental in ending the Wars of Religion and was the first of the Bourbon dynasty. Admired for his gallantry, he has been popular as a great king since his reign up to the present. The illustrious king is said to have had at least 56 mistresses. That alone explains that he must have been great as he was able to handle such a lot of ladies. To see inside the castle, we had to join a group guided tour in French. Although I was hopeless at French, I could still enjoy going around many luxurious rooms, reading the English explanations. The collection of wall tapestries was especially remarkable.

The following day, we moved on to Biarritz, on the west coast of France. Biarritz is also a resort which was transformed by the European rich in the 19th century. It has one of the best surfing beaches in Europe and one of the best luxury hotels in France, Hotel du Palais, which was a former residence of Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III.

We didn't explore the fancy hotel, just seeing it from a distance but we experienced the splendid beach. I haven't swum in such high waves on a lovely sunny day before. I didn't go further than where my feet could touch the bottom, but the undercurrent was so strong that I was almost dragged offshore. It was most exciting and memorable.

Tastes of Troyes and Champagne

Champagne is a world renowned, luxury sparkling wine made in the eponymous region in France. We visited Troyes, the former capital of Champagne, not for the fizzy drink but to see its historical townscape, although there is no denying that I had a secret intention of tasting some fizz.

Troyes is famous for its heritage of stained glass. I thought there were many churches as well as a big cathedral in the small town centre. What most impressed me was Troyes’ many half-timbered houses built right next to each other. Some of the old houses were far from level or upright. I wonder how they have avoided collapse?

It was interesting to walk along Troyes’ narrow streets but it was very cold which was unusual for the end of March. Getting chilly, we went into an Indian restaurant for a hot lunch. It was doubtful that champagne was going to go well with an Indian curry, nevertheless, I ordered one as an aperitif. One small glass of champagne was 6 euro, which was expensive as we were in the productive centre. Anyway, I enjoyed a luxurious feeling although I couldn’t tell the difference between the champagne and other sparkling wines.

A taste of Alsace

We went to Kaysersberg in the Alsace region of north-eastern France. As a border region, Alsace has been fought over for centuries by France and Germany. The town's name, Kayersberg means 'Emperor's mountain' in German.

Alsace is renowned for its wine and its unique traditional costume. Hansi, an artist from Colmar, drew attractive characters wearing the costume, which has made it well-known. We saw souvenirs with his illustrations at many shops. Charming half-timbered houses were attractive features of the town, which was the same in Colmar which we had visited before.

Speaking of food, a unique shaped cake, Kouglof is a special product in Alsace. That is actually popular food in Germany and Austria as well. A whole one was too big to try, but I got a chance to eat a piece for breakfast in a hotel. It was like a cross between cake and bread.

Sauerkraut, known as a German speciality, is also popular there. I tried one with a variety of sausages and bacon at a restaurant. My plate was heaped full of sauerkraut and hearty meat products on the top. I could only manage to eat half, although it was delicious.

Avignon

After leaving Corsica, we visited Avignon, the main city of the Provence region in southern France.
Since Pope Clement V moved the papal court to Avignon in 1309, having been encouraged by the scheming of Philippe IV of France, 7 Popes had lived there by 1377. I didn't know the papal court had been away from Rome.

First, we visited the Palais des Papes, the Papal Palace, in anticipation of seeing a gorgeous palace appropriate for Popes. However, there were many bare rooms without furniture or ornaments, exposing stone walls inside. That was because virtually all the furnishings and works of art had been destroyed or looted following the Revolution of 1789. From a tourist's point of view, it was rather dull. It looked like a huge fortress rather than a palace.

Then we went to see The Pont Saint Benezet, the Avignon Bridge, which is well-known thanks to a children's song, Sur la pont d'Avignon (Under the Bridge of Avignon). It is called "bridge" but it has no connection to the other side of the river. It used to be 900m length with 22 arches but having been damaged by battles or floods several times, its restoration finally stopped.

A town on cliffs in Corsica

A member of staff at our hotel said, 'Without visiting Bonifacio, you cannot say you have been to Corsica.' So we visited Bonifacio, at the southern end of Corsica. The town built on sheer cliffs, was certainly unique and impressive.
We noticed one house right on the end of the cliff, was up for sale. Although the town was very attractive, I would be too nervous to live there, considering the cliff might fall down some day.

Corsica had been controlled by different Italian nations successively, when in 1755 following years of struggle it started to run its own affairs under Pasquale Paoli. However in 1769 it was "sold" to Louis XV of France by the Italian Genoese.  As a consequence, the Corsicans have resented France ever since.

In Corsica, road signs are written in both French and Corsican. We saw that some patriotic Corsicans had blotted out the French words on some of the signs. Although Corsica is mostly living on tourism, some Corsicans have a very insular character. But thanks to that, its wild beauty has been preserved.

When we arrived in Bastia in Corsica, we had to stay on the ferry for three hours, because there was a rumour that a bomb was about to blow up in the port. I didn't know what was going on in reality because I don't understand French, but the incident may have been caused by some extreme separatists.

Mountain goats and strange rocks in Corsica

On the way to our next hotel in Propriano, we had a picnic by a road with a picturesque view. Then a herd of mountain goats with vigorous appetites came along the road, enjoying eating grass and passed by.

Goat cheese is one of the Corsican  specialities so we bought one, one day. It tasted unusual to me. Other specialities include biscuits and cakes   made from chestnut powder. I didn't try them. Instead, I had a delicious chestnut cream pasta and a bottle of local chestnut beer called Pietra. Pasta is popular food there because Corsica used to be within the Italian sphere of influence.

The rocks were the special feature on the walk the next day. Their odd shapes in the landscape fascinated us.
