湖水地方に寄り道する Stopping over in the Lake District

友人カップルとスコットランドで待ち合わせをして一緒にクラシックカーで回るという旅を企画しました。私たちは待ち合わせ場所のスコットランドに着く前に、一歩手前の湖水地方に泊まって１日ウォーキングをすることにして、アンブルサイドという町に車で約９時間かかって到着。今年３８歳の我が家のクラシックカー（トライアンフ－ＴＲ６）は車内の会話が難しいくらい音がうるさい（笑）ので、日本だったら近所迷惑になると思うのですが、イギリス人はクラシックカーが大好きだから大丈夫。昔の車は個性的で愛着がわくのも分ります。

We arranged a sightseeing tour with friends to go to Scotland in classic cars. Before we met them in Scotland, on the way, we stayed in the Lake District to enjoy walking. It took around 9 hours by car to get to Ambleside in the Lake District from Cornwall. Our classic car -a Triumph TR6- is 38 years old and a little noisy so we needed to raise our voices to chat in the car. The noise may be regarded as a nuisance in Japan but it's no problem for British people who love classic cars. That's understandable because classic ones are full of character.

湖水地方はイギリス北西部、大小たくさんの湖が点在する風光明媚な土地。特に日本では「ピーターラビット」のふるさととして有名です。『ピーターラビットおはなし』の作者ビアトリクス・ポッターのギャラリーや家を訪れましたが、観光客の約半分は日本人で驚きました。イギリスでもポッターは有名ですが、ここ湖水地方は美しい自然を満喫できる場所として人気があります。ピーターラビット、あひるのジマイマなどの絵本で財を成して１４もの巨大な農場を購入したポッターは、それをナショナルトラストという民間団体に全部寄付してその美しい自然をそのまま保つように遺言したとか。

The Lake District is a place of great scenic beauty in northwest England with many lakes of various sizes. It is also famous as the birthplace of "Peter Rabbit", especially among Japanese. I was surprised that half of the visitors were Japanese when I visited the house and gallery of the author Beatrix Potter. She is certainly famous in the UK as well but the Lake District is mainly popular as a place to enjoy the outdoors and beautiful nature. Potter made a fortune through her stories for children with characters such as Peter Rabbit, Jemina Puddleduck etc and bought 14 farms. She left all her land to the National Trust, a private organization and willed them to keep the lovely scenery as it was.

その日は晴天に恵まれ、ウォーキングを楽しむことができました。木漏れ日の中を歩いて滝を眺め、小山（ワンズフェル）に登って湖を眼下に見、パブでサンドイッチをつまみながらビール。そして戻って、湖岸に面したユースホステルの前でお茶を楽しむ。最高の一日でした。

Luckily it was fine for our walking. We passed through a wood, saw a waterfall, climbed up Wansfell and overlooked lakes, before taking a rest in a pub with a sandwich and a beer. Then we walked back to our Youth hostel which fronts onto the lake and had tea outside. It was just splendid.
