The Camel Trail in the UK

I went for a walk on the Camel Trail, which was a disused railway line and has been converted into a path for cycling, walking or horse riding. The trail runs along the River Camel and the name Camel is said to be derived from old Cornish words, meaning 'crooked one', which is nothing to do with the camel, animal.

The total length of the trail is about 18miles and I walked about 10.5miles (17km) from Bodmin to Padstow in 4 hours. As might be expected from an old railway, the path was quite flat and easy to walk. By the time I got to Padstow, the sun had come out and the beautiful estuary appeared in front of me.

On the way, there was a bridge with a load sign, 'WEAK BRIDGE.' with a 3 ton weight limit. A freight train could have easily exceeded 3t. It must have been all right in those days.

By the way, the sigh 'WEAK BRIDGE' always makes me chuckle because in Japan I have only seen weight limit signs which don't confess their weakness.

Land's End in the UK

Cape Roca in Portugal is well-known as the westernmost extent of the Eurasian landmass and for its description, 'Here, where the land ends and the sea begins...', whereas not many people know that there is the place named Land's End in the UK.

The day after my 6 hour walk, I headed for Land's End because I didn't want to miss the good weather. Mistakenly driving off route, I ended up at a different start point, nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful coastline from Treen to Land's End, the most westerly point of mainland Britain.

The signpost says 874 miles (1,407km) to John o'Groats, which is the most northerly town in mainland Scotland, and is the start or end point running through mainland Britain from southwest to northeast. It is said that cyclists take around two weeks and off-road walkers walk 1,200 miles (1,900 km) and take two or three months.

In Japan, cycling  across the mainland is a sort of challenge for students during their summer holiday. Whilst here in the UK, challengers are from many age groups and some are even  retired. I take my hat off to their vitality.

Thanks to the brilliant weather, my 5.5 hours walk was satisfying with stunning views. If I walk for a couple of months, it would be rainy half of the time, therefore it is better to go for an easy walk when the weather forecast is good,-  I thought pathetically.

Golitha Falls and Cheesewring

We went walking on Bodmin Moor. Moor means generally uncultivated hills, which sounds like a bleak area. However, Bodmin Moor has many attractive places to visit. This time, we visited Golitha Falls, down the River Fowey.

Rather than falls, it is a series of cascades and flows through a wooded gorge. The contrast between green moss and autumn leaves created an air of fantasy, which was absolutely breathtaking. No wonder many photographers are attracted there.

Then, we went to see Trevethy Quoit, an ancient burial chamber. It is amazing that ancient people were able to stack such huge rocks about 4000 years ago.

After that, we went on to see the Cheesewring, named after a press-like device which was once used to make cheese. It is said to be naturally formed.

According to a legend, long ago, a race of giants inhabited Cornwall. A saint who came as a missionary challenged a giant to a rock-throwing contest, whereby the rock formation was made. The saint won, thanks to descended angels, who placed the top rock. Those miraculous balanced rocks are just like a divine act of creation.

The Lizard and Kynance Cove

The Lizard peninsula in Cornwall is the most southerly part of the British mainland. We went hiking with friends, heading for Kynance Cove, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Although the cove was packed with crowds of holidaymakers, the view of the emerald green water and white sandy beaches was breathtaking. Thanks to the good weather, we enjoyed our picnic there.

I normally take sandwiches for a picnic but this time I made 'Onigiri,' rice balls, which are typical Japanese picnic food. Normal low-priced rice available here is dry and not suitable for making a rice ball. So I used special rice for sushi from a supermarket. What surprised me was the sushi rice was made in Italy. I didn't know that sushi rice is produced in Italy.

After that, we walked on the coast of the Lizard and enjoyed its stunning views even more.

Sea goblins and St. Martin's - The Isles of Scilly-

We went on another boat tour for wildlife watching and for visiting St. Martin's. I have seen wild seals sunbathing on a rock several times before but it was the first time I had seen their heads popping out from the sea, just like moles of Whack-A-Mole. Those people-watching seals were lovely,  although my photos don't show their charm, far from that, they look like sea goblins somehow.

It was fantastic to see the views of scattered islands and rocks from St. Martin. Occasional sunshine made a huge difference to its scenery. When the sun came out, the colour of the sea looked breathtaking, just like a tropical island.

The Isles of Scilly are a place where pristine nature has remained, it would be wonderful if I could go there again.

Puffins and St. Agnes - The Isles of Scilly-

We went on a boat tour for offshore wildlife watching and visiting St. Agnes.

There was a flock of puffins floating on the sea, occasionally diving for food. They are said to migrate somewhere else at the end of July every year so we were lucky to be there just in time.

St. Agnes is famous for its beautiful white sandy beaches and strange shaped rocks. The island is connected to the neighbouring island, Gugh by a picturesque sand bar. Its crystal clear water was just irresistible. As I had imagined, the water was pretty cold and swimming for only 3 minutes was my limit, still it was bracing.

There was a local farm ice cream shop. I tasted a ginger one. In the UK, ginger is used for sweets rather than for savoury dishes. I have had a cake with crystallized ginger before but not ice cream. It had a refreshing taste.

Tresco and Bryher -The Isles of Scilly-

We crossed to Tresco and Bryher by boat. First, we landed on Bryher and walked around. Its crystal clear water was so attractive that I dabbled my feet in the sea, which was unexpectedly cold. It might be because we suffered the coldest and wettest April to June in modern history in the UK. The two islands looked close enough to manage to swim across from one to the other, but I would have frozen to death if I had tried it.

Primary school in Tresco

Except for Bryher, all five inhabited islands have a primary school. Children in Bryher go to school in Tresco by boat.

Tresco is the second largest island. There is a large garden with sub-tropical plants in the middle of the island.
Cromwell's castel

There is Cromwell's castle (built in 1651) beside the sea, which was named after Oliver Cromwell who was a central figure of the Puritan Revolution (1642-60). Scilly was the last base for holding out Royalists. It is fascinating that those small remote islands have a profound history.

Flying to St Mary's -The Isles of Scilly-

We went to the Isles of Scilly, the most South-Westerly point of the British Isles in mid-July. Its total population is just over 2000 and the climate is mild through the whole year. It took only about 10min by small airplane from Lands End, the most westerly point of the Britain. The airport was the smallest and most relaxed one I have ever been to. They didn't check any tickets or identification for check-in, we only needed to tell them our name. The plane for our return was even smaller. At the airport, we were weighed on the scales after our luggage, which was probably to balance the plane. It was first time that I had been weighed on luggage scales at an airport.

Scilly consists of 5 inhabited islands, St. Marys, Tresco, St. Martin's, Bryher and St. Agnes, and many smaller uninhabited islands. Scilly is said to have been one land mass in the Ice Age because  of the lower sea level. Now there are thousands of rocks hidden under the surface of the sea, which has caused hundreds of shipwrecks.

We stayed on St Mary's, the largest island with three quarters of the total population. Owing to the mild climate, there were flowers blooming in profusion. The little birds were less wary, which may be because of the absence of natural predators such as foxes.

York and puffins on a cliff

Although it is likely that New York in the US is better known among Japanese, there is a city named York in the UK, which has carved out a long history and gave its name to New York. On the way back from our Scottish trip, we visited York, the city in the centre of Yorkshire, to meet my husband's friends. York has retained many medieval structures and is surrounded by walls. People can walk around almost all of the walls and look down on the city.

York is also famous for its Minster. In the hierarchy of the Church of England, the archbishop of the Canterbury is NO.1, and NO.2 is the archbishop of York. An Archbishop is senior to the bishops from all the other cathedrals. Therefore York Minster is the second most important church in England. York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe. The present buildings was begun in 1220 and completed 250 years later.
While we were walking around inside, a choir started their practice. The sound of the pipe organ and their beautiful voices traveled throughout the minster, which made it even more impressive.

The following day, we went to the east coast of Yorkshire, to Bempton, which consists of 5 miles (8km) of steep cliffs. It is the largest seabird-breeding colony in England and is a good spot for bird-watching. I was extremely pleased that I could see popular puffins there. They have a cute face and feet like a penguin.

Stopping over in the Lake District

We arranged a sightseeing tour with friends to go to Scotland in classic cars. Before we met them in Scotland, on the way, we stayed in the Lake District to enjoy walking. It took around 9 hours by car to get to Ambleside in the Lake District from Cornwall. Our classic car -a Triumph TR6- is 38 years old and a little noisy so we needed to raise our voices to chat in the car. The noise may be regarded as a nuisance in Japan but it's no problem for British people who love classic cars. That's understandable because classic ones are full of character.

The Lake District is a place of great scenic beauty in northwest England with many lakes of various sizes. It is also famous as the birthplace of "Peter Rabbit", especially among Japanese. I was surprised that half of the visitors were Japanese when I visited the house and gallery of the author Beatrix Potter. She is certainly famous in the UK as well but the Lake District is mainly popular as a place to enjoy the outdoors and beautiful nature. Potter made a fortune through her stories for children with characters such as Peter Rabbit, Jemina Puddleduck etc and bought 14 farms. She left all her land to the National Trust, a private organization and willed them to keep the lovely scenery as it was.

Luckily it was fine for our walking. We passed through a wood, saw a waterfall, climbed up Wansfell and overlooked lakes, before taking a rest in a pub with a sandwich and a beer. Then we walked back to our Youth hostel which fronts onto the lake and had tea outside. It was just splendid.

Cheddar, birthplace of cheddar cheese

We visited Cheddar, the birthplace of cheddar cheese. Now that cheddar cheese production has spread all over the world and has become a mass market product, its definition is uncertain. However traditional cheddar cheese is still produced at Cheddar, whose nearby gorge has caves which once provided the perfect environment for storing and maturing the cheese. We found cave aged cheddar cheese at the oldest shop in the gorge. We tasted it and couldn't help buying it even though it cost 10 times as much as one which we can get at a supermarket. We hadn't had such delicious cheddar cheese ever before.

We enjoyed spectacular views at the gorge as well. I recommend hiking in and around the gorge with the superb eponymous cheese instead of chocolate. Although my husband would say chocolate is essential.
