イギリスの地の果て Land's End in the UK

ポルトガルのロカ岬はユーラシア大陸の最西端にあり、「ここに地果て、海始まる・・・」と記されていることで有名です。しかし、イギリスにランズエンド（＝地の果て）という地名が存在することはあまり知られていないかと思います。

Cape Roca in Portugal is well-known as the westernmost extent of the Eurasian landmass and for its description, 'Here, where the land ends and the sea begins...', whereas not many people know that there is the place named Land's End in the UK.

６時間ウォーキングの翌日、天気が良かったの で、ランズエンド目指してウォーキングに出かけました。慣れない運転で道を間違えて、出発地点を変更するはめになりましたが、トゥリンから出発、美しい海 岸線を歩き、イギリス本島ブリテン島の最西端、ランズエンドに到着しました。

The day after my 6 hour walk, I headed for Land's End because I didn't want to miss the good weather. Mistakenly driving off route, I ended up at a different start point, nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful coastline from Treen to Land's End, the most westerly point of mainland Britain.

標識には「ジョン・オ・グローツ」（スコットランドの最北端の村）まで８７４マイル（＝約１４０７ｋｍ）と記されており、南西から北東まで、島を縦断する人 達のスタートまたはゴール地点となっています。自転車だと２週間位、徒歩だと道路を避けて１２００マイル（＝約１９００ｋｍ）の距離となり２～３か月を要するようです。

日本では自転車日本縦断とか夏休み中に学生がしそうなことですが、こちらでは 色々な年代の人がチャレンジ、定年退職してからなんていう人もいて、活動的で驚かされます。


The signpost says 874 miles (1,407km) to John o'Groats, which is the most northerly town in mainland Scotland, and is the start or end point running through mainland Britain from southwest to northeast. It is said that cyclists take around two weeks and off-road walkers walk 1,200 miles (1,900 km) and take two or three months.

In Japan, cycling  across the mainland is a sort of challenge for students during their summer holiday. Whilst here in the UK, challengers are from many age groups and some are even  retired. I take my hat off to their vitality. 

結局５時間半ほど歩きましたが、天気に恵まれ絶景が楽しめてよかったです。２～３ヵ月も歩くとなると、半分くらいは雨では？と思うと、気楽に天気予報を見てでかけた方がいいかな・・・、とひ弱な私は思いました。

Thanks to the brilliant weather, my 5.5 hours walk was satisfying with stunning views. If I walk for a couple of months, it would be rainy half of the time, therefore it is better to go for an easy walk when the weather forecast is good,-  I thought pathetically.
