少雨結構 An event proceeded in drizzly weather

夫がビジネス出張で不在のため、自分の誕生日には何かチャレンジと好きなことをしよう、と思い立ち、チャレンジ＝一人で知らない土地での車の運転、好きなこと＝ウォーキング、ということで長距離ウォーキングに出かけることにしました。ところが天気予報はほぼ一日中雨。イギリスの天気は変わりやすいことで有名ですが、天気予報も変わりやすいので、とりあえずスタート地点に車で行って、ゴールからバスで戻るという計画を立てました。

I got the idea of doing some challenging and favourite thing on my birthday as my husband would be away on business. I'm a keen walker and not a confident driver, so I planned a long-distance walk and my challenge was driving alone to an unfamiliar place. Unfortunately, the weather forecast seemed to be wet and miserable all the day. The UK weather is notoriously changeable and so is the weather forecast. In the hope of the forecast changing, I made a couple of walking plans to drive to the start point and to take a bus back from the end point.  

さて、前日夜チェックすると、相変わらず雨。２か所候補のうち、一か所がまし（＝軽い雨）に見えたので、そちらかなと思いつつ床につきました。そして当日朝、早く起床して天気予報を見ると、ましに見えた場所は激しい雨に変わっており、もう１か所はまし（＝軽い雨）に変わっていたのでした。その翌日（日曜日）の天気予報は晴れなので、ずらせばよかったのですが、日曜日は地元のバスが走っていないのと、やっぱりせっかくの誕生日なので、思い切ってましな方（しかも元々行きたかった方）に出かけることにしました。

The previous night, the forecast was no better than before. One of the two possible areas seemed to be better, expecting light rain, so I assumed it might work. However, when I got up early next morning, the forecast had changed to heavy rain and the other area become better, with only light rain expected through the day. I could put off the walk to the next day as the weather would be fine but I was determined to do it on my birthday and also there was no local bus on Sunday, the next day. I went for the better weather area, my original priority in the end.

道を間違えつつ、スタート地点に到着。イギリス南西部の海岸歩道（全長６３０マイル＝約１０１３ｋｍ）の一部、ウィドマスベイ（Widemouth Bay）からボスキャッスル（Boscastle）、２２．５ｋｍを歩きました。運転中は何度か激しい雨に降られましたが、歩いている際には、数回の少雨のみ。晴れ間に見えた虹がとてもきれいでした。天気予報のせいか、他のウォーカーはたった１組しか見かけませんでした。ウェットスーツを着たサーフィンに行こうとする若者（私に言わせると狂っているとしか言いようがないですが・・・。）には２人見かけましたが。荒涼とした冬の海岸沿いですが、花も咲いていたり、雄大な景色を堪能できました。

Despite taking a wrong turn once, I arrived at the start point by car. I walked part of the South West Coast Footpath, whose total length is 630miles/1013km. My route took me from Widemouth Bay to Boscastle, 22.5km/14miles. Although I had torrential rain a few times whilst driving, I luckily only had light showers a few times whilst walking. On top of that, beautiful rainbows above the path were quite something. Maybe owing to the weather forecast, there was no other walker on the path except for one family, but I met a couple of youngsters in wet suits for surfing, whom I thought totally mad... The coastline in winter seemed to be desolate, yet the majestic landscape was amazing. There were even some flowers out. 

６時間上り下りの激しいウォーキング、３時間の慣れないドライブでへとへとになりましたが、大満足。帰ると、夫からの大きな花束とバースデーカードが届いていました。素敵な一日でした。

I was totally exhausted by the 6 hours walking up and down and 3 hours unaccustomed driving but satisfied by the successful day. When I got home, a big lovely bouquet and a birthday card from my husband had been delivered, which made my day more delightful.
