The Coast to Coast Trail

Crown mines

Cornwall was once the world's major producer of tin and copper. The region produced two-thirds of the world’s supply of copper in the early 19th century, having developed its mining technology. Now the 'Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape' is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not only are there numerous mines and buildings, but there is also a network of trails throughout Cornwall. Many of these closely follow the tramway and railway routes once used to transport ore and vital supplies.

Some of the trails are now revived for walking, cycling and horse riding. 'The Coast to Coast Trail' links the North and South coasts, stretching 11miles (17.5km). I have been cycling back and forth there. And I was thinking of running across some day. On my birthday I finally did it. Having completed the trail run, I continued to a pub, thirsting for a Cornish beer. All very satisfactory.

Potted banana and pineapple

Having heard `If you plant a pineapple crown, it will produce fruit', we planted one three years ago. The leaves have grown gradually but looked dead as their tips were brown. Nevertheless, it is now forming a pineapple!! The fruit is small, a size of my fist at the moment , however, we are very excited about a prospect of 'Buy 1 Get 1 Free'.
10 months ago
6 months ago

On top of that, we found our potted banana plant is forming a huge flower. We don't want to be too optimistic but we may even get bananas! It is said that a banana plant dies after bearing fruits and a new generation grows from the shoots around the parent plant. Normally, bananas have no seed and multiply that way.

The potted tropical plants are in our conservatory now for the winter but were left outside in summer. They grow very slowly but steadily.

Pheasants

Pheasants (from an earlier shoot)
We buy untreated milk from a farm nearby. When we went there, there were about 20 pheasants hung on the gate. (Note; In the UK, one can shoot certain birds during the shooting season.)
Cats were showing an interest. Having been told about the cats, the farmer’s wife said, ‘It’s all right, we have too many. Help yourself, otherwise they would be wasted.’
So my husband brought 8 pheasants back. He plucked them, taking off the legs, heads and the organs out. It was the first time he had done plucking. Well done.
I cooked two of them in the oven and six went into the freezer. They were a bit tough but were delicious. It tastes like a cross between chicken and duck.

Old Beaujolais Nouveau

Nouveau means new in French. Beaujolais Nouveau is the first Beaujolais wine of the season, released for sale every year on the third Thursday of November. The day is marked by parties, fireworks and other festivities in France. The tradition of drinking the wines so young is said to be rooted in the 19th century.

I witnessed the Beaujolais Nouveau craze in Japan every year, whereas I haven't seen any Beaujolais Nouveau bottle on sale or on an advertisement since I moved to the UK. The craze in the UK seemed to die down as the sales slipped from 742,000 bottles in 1999 to 107,000 in 2011. Perhaps, the fresh light wine is not quite to the British taste. The Beaujolais traders must have made a considerable success in the Japanese market since Japan is now the biggest Beaujolais Nouveau importing country. I assume the fruity taste suits Japanese food as well as Japanese people, moreover, we Japanese are pushovers for the words 'on sale for limited time only'.

The other day, I discoverd a Beaujolais Nouveau bottle in our storeroom. It said 1993... so it was 21 years old!! Some red wine becomes better as it matures but the Beaujolais Nouveau seemed not to have made any progress. Perhaps I am the only Japanese who has tasted 21 year-old Beaujolais Nouveau. It was a sort of invaluable experience.

An invitation to a cervical screening test

UK residents are entitled to have medical treatment and some regular health screening, mostly, free of charge. (The cost is covered by taxation.)  It may cost less to pay for checkups than to pay for medical treatment after problems arise. It is a wonderful system as one is normally reluctant to do a checkup of one's own accord.

In the UK, women aged between 25 and 49 are invited for cervical screening tests every three years and women aged between 50 and 64, every five years. My recent checkup showed that there were abnormal cells. Consequently, it was decided to remove them as there was a possibility of them becoming cancerous.

私 Me

It is said that it normally takes 5-15 years to develop cancer. At that time, we had already booked tickets to go to Japan, so the doctor suggested that I had the treatment after the trip because there would be blood discharge for a month. I went to hospital the day after we returned. The treatment itself took only 30 minutes without pain owing to local anesthesia. Then I was able to go back home straightaway. I was told that there would be blood discharge like having heavy period, however, it wasn't as bad as that in my case. Although the discharge went on for a month, there was no difficulty in daily life otherwise.

In Japan, the existence of a cervical screening test isn't common knowledge, it isn't free of charge, and one may feel it a bit embarrassing. Accordingly, not many women have it. If I hadn't been in the UK, the thought of having the checkup wouldn't even have occurred to me. I wouldn't have thought I would be in a pre-cancer condition in my youth (I would say I'm still in my youth) as I had confidence in my health. Cancer seemed to me to be something that we should start to worry about in our fifties. As a matter of fact, it is said that the number of women in their twenties or thirties who contract cervical cancer has increased recently.

The sickness in its early stages seems to have no obvious symptoms.Thereupon, I strongly recommend the regular checkup to all ladies. Also to all gentlemen, I suggest that you send this message to your precious partner.

Steak and ale pie

For Valentine's day, I made a steak and ale pie for the first time. It is a traditional British pub dish, a pie with beef casserloe cooked in beer.

An ale is a type of traditional beer and popular in the UK while most of the beers in Japan are lagers. Ales are brewed with top-fermenting yeast which allows for rapid fermentation at warmer temperatures. Lagers are brewed with bottom-fermenting yeast which ferments more slowly and at colder temperatures. Ales are to be drunk at room tempretures, which I think suits the relatively cool UK climate. There is no froth on beer in pubs unlike Japan. People order a pint, which is the unit for beer (568ml in the UK) and its glass is designed for a pint when it's poured to the full. If the froth takes part of the volume, the liquid would be less than a pint, which would be regarded as a rip-off. Therefore bartenders normally make the froth overflow and pour the beer to the brim. The Japanese beer pouring ratio, (golden ratio) of 7 to 3 is impossible here.

I chose a recipe, 'Steak, Guinness and cheese pie' by Jamie Olive, a popular British chef. I cooked beef in a slow cooker overnight instead of an oven  (casserole beef here is too tough to eat without cooking slowly for a long time), using an ale instead of Guinness as I wanted to drink the ale. The next day, the stew tasted......exactly like the ale itself. Well, I thought it shouldn't be like that even though I like beer. So I added some seasonings, then cheese, to my taste. I also made the pie dough myself. My two days' effort certainly satisfied my husband and me. However, I feel that a homemade steak and ale pie should be a treat once in a while as it's time consuming and beer is too good for putting into the dish; although my husband would like it regularly.

A fruit called 'dog's bottom'

At the beginning of December, we found fruit on a tree on our walk. It occurred to me that I saw fruit like that in a wild food guidebook the day before. So we collected some, hoping they were edible.

They were medlars. (Their Japanese name is western karin but is quite unlike Japanese karin. It's rather like a big rosehip.) Medlars had been popular fruit until the mediaeval period but are now not well-known. They should be kept until they are half-rotten, then finally they become edible. That seems to be because of the cold weather in the UK as the young fruit can be eaten straight off the tree in Mediterranean regions. In the Middle age, it used to be called 'dog's bottom.' I can recognise why from its appearance. Obviously the name didn't help stop the decline in its popularity.

I made medlar and orange crumble. It took ages to scrape out the edible part from the small fruit and separate it from the pips. This probably would have been the biggest drawback for medlar eating. However, it was delicious, tasting like something between a sweet bean paste and a soft dried persimmon to me. I would like to round up 'dog's bottoms' again.

Parasol mushroom

Cep

We have had our interest aroused since we chanced upon an edible wild mushroom, -a cep -  last year. This autumn,
I got into a habit of bringing a mushroom guide book, given to me by a friend, on our walks. Having spotted some mushrooms which seemed to be edible, we couldn't definitely distinguish them from poisonous ones, so  we did not try them.

photo from a friend who went for a walk with us

Parasol mushrooms
But finally, other edible mushrooms were found. They were parasol mushrooms (biologically named Macrolepiota procera) and were dotted around the field. After checking on the internet in order to make  doubly sure, we fried one in butter as a website suggested and tried. It was mild and tasty.

Then later, I discovered the parasol mushroom has a Japanese name, 'Karakasa-take' ('Karakasa' is a traditional Japanese umbrella made of bamboo and paper, 'take' means mushroom). A Japanese website mentioned, 'there is a poisonous mushroom similar to Karakasa-take, which is hard to distinguish, so it is advisable not to taste'. What? We have already eaten one.... Hurry-scurry, I turned back to the English website. That said that the parasol mushroom is difficult to mistake for any other as the poisonous look-alike Chlorophyllum molybdites does not occur in Europe. I certainly wouldn't want to risk my neck but wild mushrooms are nectar. Therefore I will keep up mushroom hunting but with great caution.

Pancake Day

Pancake Day is not a day invented for sales promotion but a traditional Christian event, which is also known as Shrove Tuesday. 'Shrove' stems from an old English word, 'shrive' meaning 'confess all sins'. From the day after Shrove Tuesday, called Ash Wednesday, to Easter, which is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, there is a 40 day (excluding Sundays) fasting and abstinence period called Lent. Pancakes were a way to use up any stocks of milk, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent, so people traditionally eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. In accordance with their rules, such as no snacking or no meat, some pious Christians go on an abstemious diet during Lent.

The pancakes in England are thin and similar to French crepes, and traditionally eaten with sprinkle of sugar and squeezed lemon. On Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Races are held in various places. People run with a frying pan and flip a pancake as they go.

A German friend says there is a carnival before Lent. They have costume parades and eat a Faschingskrapfen,  a jam-filled doughnut, instead of a pancake.

Ramadan, a fasting month for Muslims, is widely known in Japan, but I didn't know Christianity has a practice of fasting or there are carnivals in various places before the fasting period. It is fascinating to know many different customs.

Red sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning

Red sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning.'

In Japan, we say 'A red sky at night means clear (the next day), a red sky in the morning means rain,' which is similar to an English rhyme, 'Red sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning.'

The weather in the UK comes from the west under the influence of the prevailing wind as it does in Japan, which may explain the similarity in the expressions. Some use 'sailor' instead of 'shepherd', which also reflects a characteristic of the UK.

An event proceeded in drizzly weather

I got the idea of doing some challenging and favourite thing on my birthday as my husband would be away on business. I'm a keen walker and not a confident driver, so I planned a long-distance walk and my challenge was driving alone to an unfamiliar place. Unfortunately, the weather forecast seemed to be wet and miserable all the day. The UK weather is notoriously changeable and so is the weather forecast. In the hope of the forecast changing, I made a couple of walking plans to drive to the start point and to take a bus back from the end point.

The previous night, the forecast was no better than before. One of the two possible areas seemed to be better, expecting light rain, so I assumed it might work. However, when I got up early next morning, the forecast had changed to heavy rain and the other area become better, with only light rain expected through the day. I could put off the walk to the next day as the weather would be fine but I was determined to do it on my birthday and also there was no local bus on Sunday, the next day. I went for the better weather area, my original priority in the end.

Despite taking a wrong turn once, I arrived at the start point by car. I walked part of the South West Coast Footpath, whose total length is 630miles/1013km. My route took me from Widemouth Bay to Boscastle, 22.5km/14miles. Although I had torrential rain a few times whilst driving, I luckily only had light showers a few times whilst walking. On top of that, beautiful rainbows above the path were quite something. Maybe owing to the weather forecast, there was no other walker on the path except for one family, but I met a couple of youngsters in wet suits for surfing, whom I thought totally mad... The coastline in winter seemed to be desolate, yet the majestic landscape was amazing. There were even some flowers out.

I was totally exhausted by the 6 hours walking up and down and 3 hours unaccustomed driving but satisfied by the successful day. When I got home, a big lovely bouquet and a birthday card from my husband had been delivered, which made my day more delightful.

Christmas in a box

We spent this Christmas at my husband's Mother's house with two of her friends. For our Christmas dinner, which in the UK is normally lunch time on the 25th, she prepared a big roast goose. We thoroughly enjoyed Christmas day, the meals, chatting and games before we left for home at night. We took bags of recycling papers from her house and stopped by a recycling skip at a supermarket on the way home. At that time, the incident happened.

夫の日頃のDIY(do-it-yourself)=日曜大工根性万歳。

When my husband shook out a bag of paper he lost his wedding ring inside the skip !!

The huge metal enclosed skip was padlocked and couldn't be opened. There was nobody around or in the supermarket which closed on the 25th and 26th for Christmas. Worried that the skip might soon be emptied, we returned home at once before returning with a power generator, an electric saw, torches and so on. The idea of cutting off the padlock was beyond my conception, and also could be a crime. When the generator produced a tremendous noise, I was worried if someone had noticed us and called the police. But the generator didn't work well, so he switched to a manual hacksaw, and his DIY spirit paid off. We opened the lid and entered the skip. At Christmas midnight, we spent more than 2 hours inside, checking the area with torches where the ring dropped, which contained ONLY about 1/10 of all the papers. You can imagine how big the skip was (Also it was almost full.)

Our efforts consumed our Christmas feast's calorie satisfactorily but bore no fruit. We called it a day (night?) and next morning my husband telephoned the supermarket  head office and the paper recycling company and managed to get a permission for the skip hunting. On top of that, he called a local radio station, BBC Radio Cornwall, asking if anyone would lend us a metal detector. After his story and request had been on air, we received several heart-warming offers, not only offers of 3 metal detectors, but also help for searching with us.

There were two paper recycling skips side be side. Our plan was to ask for the recycle collection truck to leave the one containing the ring and to empty the other during the night, so that we could move things from the full skip to the emptied one little by little checking for the ring as we scanned with the detectors.

The night before the day of action, we went to the skips in order to make sure the right skip was emptied. Then we found the recycling lorry had broken down and couldn't empty either skip. One trouble after another, what a mess!

Inevitably, we had to postpone our plan for two days, avoiding Saturday, one of the busiest days for the supermarket. By the first feasible day, Sunday 30th, our target skip was bursting full and the one which had been emptied was already half full.

We started operations at 9.00 in the morning and our helpers, who heard our saga from the radio, a couple, grandfather grandson, and our friend joined us at 10.00. 7 of us and 3 metal detectors worked step by step. When we had finished about 1/3 of the skip around 11.00, the ring was found.

The person who found it was actually my husband himself, not a metal detector, nevertheless, we were extremely grateful to those who lent us detectors, and needless to say, to those who helped us on the spot. We were also thankful to the helpful supermarket manager, recycling collection workers, the radio personalities and the police who came to put out road cones for our operations. By the way, we sent a cheque to replace the padlock we broke although they said no need.

Throughout this happening I was moved by kindness from various people and by my husband's determination and power of action. If I were him, I would have given up. He tried to find it very hard because I gave it to him. Now it is a sort of good memory that we spent Christmas night in the box together.

Holy Days

Talking of holy people in Japan, nobody's name occurs to me,  which is probably because I believe in no religion. I noticed that there are many holy people or saints in Christianity after I moved to the UK. I had thought that Christians wouldn't admire other beings because their religion is monotheism. In point of fact, some people who sacrificed themselves or contributed to Christianity were made saints and have been venerated. That is because veneration and worship are different and God still is the one and only for them.

The United Kingdom consists of four countries, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and each of which has its patron saint. On the days of these saints, there are celebrations held in various places. To my surprise, there are more than one saint for each day of the year, although there are some differences between countries or denominations. There are calendars which show holy days, and which saint is commemorated on each day. Many people's first names are those of saints. I also didn't know the fact that each church has its own patron saint(s) until quite recently.  I hadn't realised the patron saint of the famous St Paul's Cathedral in London was St. Paul when I visited- to me it was just a name.... I should study world history and culture more.

The 125th anniversary of Truro Cathedral

We paid a swift visit to Truro Cathedral, in the city near where we live, in order to see the 125th anniversary celebrations. There were some fun events, especially for kids, held inside and the atmosphere was enjoyable.

The 125 year-old cathedral is said to be a youngster in the UK. The England's oldest parish church in continuous use is St Martin Church in Canterbury, which has been used since 597AD.

By the way, what is the difference between 'city' and 'town'? In the case of Japan, there are regulations to define it, which includes the number of people in the population. Whereas in the UK, what is called a city, is a town with a cathedral, with some exceptions. Truro is a city because of the existence of its cathedral, although its population is less than Falmouth, a town nearby (Truro-23000 /Falmouth-31000 in 2008). A city is the functional centre of its county, in Japan this is called a prefectural capital. It is fascinating for me to know that the partition of the country has been based on churches, the strong influence of Christianity.

The first Japanese wasabi grown in Europe

A friend brought me a newspaper clipping, 'British Farmer becomes first in Europe to grow Japanese wasabi.' The farmer started to grow wasabi, - a notoriously difficult challenge, - as he had discovered that wasabi paste or powder contains less than 15% of real wasabi.

Actually, most Japanese wasabi paste is made largely from horseradish, which is relatively easy to cultivate, with a green colouring added. Real, freshly grated, Japanese wasabi is a real treat. Nowadays, Sushi is a very popular food among Europeans, but it surprised me that wasabi was in the spotlight as well. Wasabi is said to have good health effects, so it may fuel the next boom. Ordinary people can buy the British wasabi from the farm, online. It's a bit too expensive for me to try British wasabi yet. Still, I'm glad to hear the news, as I am a real wasabi lover.

Seafood feasts

The other day, a Japanese friend invited me to a special seafood dinner. We enjoyed fresh seafood, which we cannot get at an ordinary supermarket because people don't have a custom to eat raw fish in the UK. If we want fish fresh enough to eat raw, we have to order one at a fishmonger or go fishing by ourselves. We had scallops, slices of sea bream, chopped horse mackerel and oysters. Besides, it was the first time I had raw lobster, which had a nice texture and a sweet taste. I had never dreamed I could eat such a variety of fresh seafood here, so I was absolutely thrilled. Thanks to my friend.

The next day was favoured by wonderful weather, so my husband and I headed off to the Helford Estuary by car with a canoe on top. We canoed its beautiful inlets and found mussels on the shore. We picked them into a empty lunch box. Then at another place, we came across fishermen loading their catch onto a ban. My husband bought a crab for £5. We felt a bit ripped off, but we enjoyed the big crab for three delicious meals, so it wasn't bad value. And in any case it was as fresh as possible.

Our catch of that day, mussels also turned into a satisfactory meal. We often pick some wild mussels and cook them with white wine. Although it's hard work to get rid of all the barnacles from the shells, which have normally been removed from bought ones, we prefer free and fresh food. We always tackle our mussels with uptempo music.

Furthermore, being elated by these fish feasts, I tried picking some seaweed at a beach and ate them as a salad. It was not inedible but I need more study for that. And hopefully I can find more wonderful free seafood.

Golden Letter Box

In the UK, a letter box is normally painted red and marked with the initial of the name of a King or a Queen at the time when one was built. For instance, ER refers to Elizabeth Regina, which is Elizabeth Ⅱand GR stands for George Rex, George Ⅵ.

Some of those traditional red letter boxes were painted gold to congratulate the UK gold medalists of the London Olympics 2012.  The medalists' local letter box were given that honour and we found one near our place. That was for Ben Ainslie, the quadruple Olympic gold and silver sailing medalist. I hear the sailing club where he learnt to sail is near the letter box.

The box is embedded in the wall of a very old thatched pub, the Pandora Inn and marked VR, Victoria Regina (1837-1901). Locals are proud of the newly-painted golden letter box as well as the old pub.

Sailing on Sola

We bought a wooden boat, Mirror 16, made by my husband's woodwork master more than 40 years ago. We put her in order, painted her hull,  varnished her topsides and finally she went afloat on the sea this summer.

In English, a boat is normally called 'she', not 'it', as if a boat is female, therefore she has a female name. In Japan, many boats have names, ending with a word 'maru,' which sounds like a boy's name. Thinking about girlish names in English, I named her 'SOLA,' which sounds similar to 'solar' and means 'sky' in Japanese. My husband agreed with that name, saying 'It sounds like do re mi fa so la..'s sola'.

By the way, in Japanese we say, 'si', instead of 'ti' when reading musical notation. So whenever I hear 'do re mi fa so la ti do,' I feel out of place and recall the word 'Sorachi,' a Hokkaido region in Japan.

We have sailed her several times and I am on the process of learning sailing technique little by little from my husband. Although Japan is surrounded by the sea, sailing is a rare sport there. Whereas in the UK there are many sailing clubs and races. I am not so serious that I want to join a race but I would like to enjoy sailing and to get over being seasick-prone.

Driving in France

If you have a UK driving licence, you can drive anywhere in EU countries. Cars run on the left hand side of the road in the UK, the same as in Japan. However, in most of the other EU countries, cars run on the right hand side. I wasn't a confident driver, nevertheless I tried driving in France the other day.

The speed limit on motorways in France is 130km/h in normal conditions and 110km/h in bad weather (I wonder how they decide the condition). Whereas in Japan the maximum speed on highways is 100km/h. Probably their roads are straight and broad enough to permit that speed although I hear that many people tend to drive at high speed and there are many accidents. It's scary for me. But my husband next to me seemed to be much more scared by my driving.

In the UK, the limit for dual carriageways and motorways is 70m/h (=112km/h), which is also faster than Japan.

A roundabout

I hadn't driven for more than 10 years since I got my driving licence in Japan. I felt uncomfortable to drive partly because of my experience of being knocked down by a car. However, as I am living in the countryside, away from public transport, I started to practice driving my old manual car little by little last year. Luckily, the UK has the same traffic system as Japan,i.e. we drive on the left side with the steering wheel on the right, which is not common in the world. Still there is a big difference between the two countries' road networks, that is the use of roundabouts. It's a system at junctions without traffic signals or sometimes used in combination with them. Basically you drive round clockwise, but first give way to the cars already on the roundabout as you enter. You don't have to wait for traffic signals, which is quite convenient. I had never seen a roundabout in Japan. It will take me more effort to get used to it...
