トゥルロ大聖堂１２５歳の誕生日 The 125th anniversary of Truro Cathedral

家の近くの市内にあるトゥルロ大聖堂が１２５歳の誕生日ということで、記念イベントをのぞきに行きました。子供たちが楽しめる催しが大聖堂内で行われていて、なごやかな雰囲気でした。

We paid a swift visit to Truro Cathedral, in the city near where we live, in order to see the 125th anniversary celebrations. There were some fun events, especially for kids, held inside and the atmosphere was enjoyable.

１２５歳の教会はイギリスでは若造なのだそう。イングランドで現在も使われ続けている最古の教会はカンターベリーにあるセント・マーティン教会で、西暦597年以来の歴史を誇っています。

The 125 year-old cathedral is said to be a youngster in the UK. The England's oldest parish church in continuous use is St Martin Church in Canterbury, which has been used since 597AD.

ところで、日本で「市と町の違い」は人口などの条件が法律で定められていますが、イギリスで「CityとTownの違い」は何なのでしょうか。例外はありますが、「大聖堂がある」とCityらしいのです。トゥルロ（Truro）には大聖堂があるので、Ｃｉｔｙですが、人口は近くの町ファルマス（Falmouth） よりも少なかったりします（トゥルロ23000人／ファルマス31000人、2008年）。市は州（County）の中心地として機能し、日本でいうなら県庁所在地。教会を中心に地区が決められたとはキリスト教の影響力の強さを感じます。

By the way, what is the difference between 'city' and 'town'? In the case of Japan, there are regulations to define it, which includes the number of people in the population. Whereas in the UK, what is called a city, is a town with a cathedral, with some exceptions. Truro is a city because of the existence of its cathedral, although its population is less than Falmouth, a town nearby (Truro-23000 /Falmouth-31000 in 2008). A city is the functional centre of its county, in Japan this is called a prefectural capital. It is fascinating for me to know that the partition of the country has been based on churches, the strong influence of Christianity.
