聖人の日 Holy Days

日本で聖人といえば・・・？頭に浮かんでくる人がいないのは私が無宗教なせいでしょうか。キリスト教にはたくさんの聖人が存在することをイギリスに移り住んで初めて知りました。キリスト教は一神教だから他の誰かを崇拝することがないと思っていたのですが、信仰に殉じた人物が聖人となって敬われています。とはいえ崇拝と崇敬は違うようで、神はやはり唯一絶対の存在なわけですが。

Talking of holy people in Japan, nobody's name occurs to me,  which is probably because I believe in no religion. I noticed that there are many holy people or saints in Christianity after I moved to the UK. I had thought that Christians wouldn't admire other beings because their religion is monotheism. In point of fact, some people who sacrificed themselves or contributed to Christianity were made saints and have been venerated. That is because veneration and worship are different and God still is the one and only for them. 

イギリスはイングランド、スコットランド、ウェールズ、北アイルランドの４つの国からなっていますが、それぞれの国に守護聖人が存在し、その日にはお祝いが各地で行われます。

最近になって知ったのは、「365日毎日聖人（1人以上）が存在する（した）」ということ。国や宗派によって異なりますが、聖人暦といって毎日どの聖人を祝う日かを記したカレンダーがあり、多くの人の名前は聖人にちなんで名づけられたものが多いようです。

さらに「教会にはそれぞれ守護聖人がいる」というのも知りませんでした。ロンドン観光で有名なセント・ポール大聖堂に行きましたが、その守護聖人が「セント・ポール（聖パウロ）」だとは考えもしませんでした・・・。もっと歴史文化を勉強せねば。。。

The United Kingdom consists of four countries, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and each of which has its patron saint. On the days of these saints, there are celebrations held in various places. To my surprise, there are more than one saint for each day of the year, although there are some differences between countries or denominations. There are calendars which show holy days, and which saint is commemorated on each day. Many people's first names are those of saints. I also didn't know the fact that each church has its own patron saint(s) until quite recently.  I hadn't realised the patron saint of the famous St Paul's Cathedral in London was St. Paul when I visited- to me it was just a name.... I should study world history and culture more.
