日本ではアメリカのニューヨークの方が有名ですが、イギリスには、ニューヨークの名前の由来であるヨークという長い歴史を刻んできた町があるのです。スコットランド旅行の帰りに旦那の友人を訪ねてヨークシャー地方の主都ヨークにやってきました。中世の街並みが残るヨークはほぼ一周城壁で覆われており、その上を歩いて回ることができます。
Although it is likely that New York in the US is better known among Japanese, there is a city named York in the UK, which has carved out a long history and gave its name to New York. On the way back from our Scottish trip, we visited York, the city in the centre of Yorkshire, to meet my husband's friends. York has retained many medieval structures and is surrounded by walls. People can walk around almost all of the walls and look down on the city.
またヨークは大聖堂も有名。英国国教会の中で、ビショップ(主教)の代表であるアーチビショップ(大主教)はトップがカンタベリー大主教、そしてナンバー2がヨーク大主教とされています。なので、ヨーク大聖堂はイングランドの全教会なのなかで2番目の地位を占めているわけです。北ヨーロッパで一番大きなゴシック式の大聖堂で、現在の建物は1220年に建設が始まり、250年後に完成したそうです。
私たちが見学していると、聖歌隊の歌の練習が始まりました。パイプオルガンと聖歌が聖堂内に響き渡り、より荘厳な雰囲気を味わうことができました。
York is also famous for its Minster. In the hierarchy of the Church of England, the archbishop of the Canterbury is NO.1, and NO.2 is the archbishop of York. An Archbishop is senior to the bishops from all the other cathedrals. Therefore York Minster is the second most important church in England. York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe. The present buildings was begun in 1220 and completed 250 years later.
While we were walking around inside, a choir started their practice. The sound of the pipe organ and their beautiful voices traveled throughout the minster, which made it even more impressive.
翌日、ヨークシャー地方の東海岸にあるバンプトンという崖を訪れました。8kmも続く切り立った崖はイングランド最大の海鳥の繁殖地で、バードウォッチングで有名です。なかでも有名なのがペンギンみたいな顔と足をしているかわいいパフィン。見れて大感激です。
The following day, we went to the east coast of Yorkshire, to Bempton, which consists of 5 miles (8km) of steep cliffs. It is the largest seabird-breeding colony in England and is a good spot for bird-watching. I was extremely pleased that I could see popular puffins there. They have a cute face and feet like a penguin.

サマープティング Summer pudding
イギリスではサマープティングというベリーを使ったデザートが夏の定番。甘過ぎるスイーツが苦手な私はこの甘酸っぱいサマープティングをとても気にいったので、家で作ってみました。
このプティング、外側がパンの白い部分でできていて、中にジューシーなベリーが詰まっています。バターも使わないし、焼かなくていいのでとっても簡単。一晩おいてアイスやクリームと一緒に食べます。
Summer pudding, which is made from berries, is one of the favourite summer desserts in the UK. I took a fancy to its sweet-and-sour taste since I'm not keen on sugary desserts, so I tried making it.
It is surrounded by slice of white bread and stuffed with juicy berries. It doesn't need any butter nor baking, it's simple to make. It is left in the fridge overnight and eaten with ice cream and/or cream.
このサマープティングは日本でもはやると思います。ただいちご以外のベリー系のフルーツはちょっと手に入れにくいかもしれません。ベリーはストロベリー、ブラックベリー、ブルーベリー、ラズベリーなど好みのベリーを合わせて入れるのですが、この時期イギリスでは新鮮なベリーが出回る、もしくは野山で手に入ります。
ちなみに私の家の近くではブラックベリーが山ほど取れます。先日とげで傷だらけになりながら集めてきて、ただいまブラックベリーワインの発酵が進行中。去年作ったワインは濃厚な甘い香りでかなり美味しかったので今から楽しみです。
I think summer pudding could be very popular in Japan, if it were easier to get several kinds of fresh berries, although strawberries are very common now. Summer pudding is made from mixed berries such as strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries etc. In the UK, those fresh berries appear on the market or can be picked in the hills and fields during their season.
We can pick many blackberries near our place. The other day, we collected them despite being scratched by their prickles. Our blackberry wine making is in progress now. Last year's blackberry wine was superb with a rich sweet smell. We are already looking forward to tasting this year's effort.

小魚とサバ Whitebait and mackerel
先日、友人の子供が家のそばのビーチで小さな魚をカップですくって持って来てくれました。こちらではホワイトベイトと呼ばれていて、日本だったら煮干しとかにする小魚です。私の旦那はこのホワイトベイトをフライにしてバターを塗ったトーストの上にのせて食べるのがお気に入りだそう。新鮮なホワイトベイトを早速パン粉をつけて揚げました。美味しかったです。旦那は喜んでトーストに載せていましたが、私はトーストなしでいただきました。日本人としてはパンに魚をのせるのはちょっとねえ・・・。
The other day, some friends' children brought us a cup of whitebait which they had scooped up at the beach near our house. My husband told me that he liked deep-fried whitebait on buttered toast. In Japan, whitebait would be dried and eaten or used as stock.
We covered the fish in breadcrumbs, then deep-fried them straightaway. They were very tasty. My husband was happy to eat them on toast but I ate them without toast. As I am Japanese, I'm a bit reluctant to eat fish on toast.
そういえばこの前、一緒にヨットに乗った友人が釣ったサバをわけてくれたので、私は喜んでお刺身にして醤油とワサビで食べましたが、旦那は焼いて「グズベリーソース」をつけて食べていました。魚にフルーツソースはちょっとねえ・・・。やっぱり大根おろしで食べたいかな。でも新鮮な場合はお刺身が一番。こちらでは生で魚は食べないので、こちらに来てから初のお刺身でした。美味しかった~。これからぜひ魚釣りに励まねば(笑)。
ちなみに興味のある方、焼きサバにグスベリーソース、一度試してみて下さい。
Some time ago, when we went on sailing, a friend caught some mackerel and gave us some. I was delighted to eat one as sashimi, sliced raw fish with soy sauce and wasabi, grated Japansese horseradish. As for my husband, he enjoyed grilled mackerel with gooseberry sauce. I feel the combination of fish and fruit sauce is a bit odd. I'd prefer grilled fish with grated daikon, Japanese radish. However if fish are very fresh, for me, the best way to eat them, is raw. In the UK, they don't eat fish raw. It was the first raw fish I'd had after I came here, which was lovely. Maybe I should try fishing from now on ?
Anyway, if you'd like to try a new taste, why don't you try grilled mackerel with gooseberry sauce?
