オリテの町を牛が走る Running bulls in Olite

大都会マドリードを離れ、オリテという町に向かいました。オリテは牛追い祭りで有名なナバラの州都パンプローナの４０ｋｍ南にあり、 ナバラの王の城を中心とした中世の街並みがのこる町です。ます。そこで別の友人と合流。みんなで散歩に出ると、たくさんの人が白い服に赤いスカーフを身につけていました。たまたまお祭りの日だったようで、街の細い路地を牛が走ってきて広場に入る様子を見学できました。

Leaving the mega-city Madrid, we made our way to Olite. It is situated 40km south of Pamplona, which is the main city of Navarra and famous for its Running of the Bulls festival. Olite is a medieval town centred on a castle, where kings of Navarra resided. We arranged to meet our friends there to travel together afterwards. We all went for a stroll and found many people wearing white clothes and a red scarf. It turned out to be a festival, so we luckily observed bulls running down a narrow street into the square.

翌日、巨大な岩の下に建設されたサン・フアン・デ・ラ・ペーニャ修道院に寄り道しました。岩を屋根につかった建物跡はなかなか面白かったですが、ちょっと寄り道、程度の山道ではなかったのが難点。

 
The following day, we made a detour to San Juan de la Peña, a monastery built under a huge overhang of rock. It was intriguing to see the remains of the building which took advantage of the rock for its roof. The drawback was that it was quite a detour up a mountain pass to go and have a look at it.

その後、ピレネー山脈を越えてフランスに入りました。山々に囲まれた風景は格別です。でもいつフランスに入ったのか気が付きませんでした。標識見逃したのかな。

Then we drove to France over the Pyrenees. The views surrounded by mountains were exceptional. I didn’t notice when we passed the border. I must have missed the sign.

マドリード Madrid

友人に会うため、マドリードへ向かいました。市の中心街ど真ん中にある友人のアパートに泊めてもらい、色々案内してもらいました。あるガイドブックにはマドリードは有名な象徴的な建造物がないと書いてありましたが、結構素敵な建物が立ち並んでいて、歩きまわるのが楽しかったです。

マヨール広場　Plaza de Mayor

We visited Madrid to meet our friends. They kindly put us up at their flat, which was right in the heart of Madrid, and showed us around. A guide book said Madrid had no famous iconic buildings, however, there were elegant buildings here and there, which I felt were very pleasant to walk around. 

スペイン銀行　Bank of Spain

プラド美術館を訪れました。世界有数の美術館で、現在約7600の絵画、約1000の彫刻が収納、その内、1300以上が展示されているそうです。全部見ていたら１日では足りないので、友人が著名な必見絵画を案内してくれました。

We went to the Prado Museum, one of the world's greatest art museums. It is said that its collection currently consists of abound 7600 paintings and 1000 sculptures and it displays more than 1300 works. Seeing them all in a day would have been too ambitious, so our friends guided us to spot the must-see famous pictures.

その夜は友人が家でまさにスペインのタパス！的なものを準備してくれました。特に柔らかいゆでだこをパプリカパウダー＆オリーブオイル（＋じゃがいも）で食べるのは新鮮で大ヒット（「タコのガリシア風」で検索すると作り方が分かります）！夫はイカ・タコの食感が苦手なのですが、この柔らかいタコはパクパク食べていました。

At that evening, our friends prepared tapas at home. Especially, cooked octopus served with potato, paprika and olive oil was sensationally tasty. (You can search for a recipe by inputting words 'Galician Octopus'.) My husband isn't normally keen on chewy squid, but he found the tender octopus a great delicacy.

アルムデナ大聖堂　Almudena Cathedral

スペインの夕食は９時以降に始まり、レストランも早くて８時に開店というのが一般的なようです。夜のマドリードは通りも飲食店も賑わっていて、不況はどこへ？といった感じでした。幸い友人の住むアパートは騒がしい通りではなかったので、ぐっすり眠れましたが、一歩通りを抜けるとスペインの夜は朝まで続いているようです。

It seemed that Spanish dinner time starts from 9.00pm onwards and restaurants open at 8.00pm at the earliest. Madrid at night was bustling, full of people in the streets, bars and restaurants, which belied the economic depression. The night life continues until the dawn. Fortunately, our friends' flat wasn't in the noisy street so we could sleep soundly.
  

蚤の市ラストロ El Rastro

翌日は毎週日曜日に開かれる蚤の市ラストロを見に行きました。ヨーロッパ最大級の蚤の市で、ありとあらゆる種類の露店が立ち並ぶ通りはものすごい人通りでした。

The following day, we went to El Rastro, a flea market held every Sunday. It was said to be one of the largest flea markets in Europe. The streets were chock-a-block with people and every conceivable kind of stall.

サボテン？ Cacti ?

友人のおかげで週末の活気あるマドリードを満喫できました。友人宅が好立地にあったため、バスも地下鉄も使わずに歩いて回れましたが、公共交通機関もかなり発達しているようです。でも市内の車の運転は最悪。帰る時、車でマドリード市外に出るまで１時間以上かかりました。大都会へは車で行くもんじゃないですね。

Thanks to our friends, we enjoyed a lively weekend in Madrid. We didn't take any bus or tube for sightseeing as their flat was conveniently located. The public transport seemed to be highly developed, whereas driving in Madrid was a nightmare. On our return, it took more than one hour to get out of the city by car. Just like other big cities, we shouldn't have done it.

美しい水のある風景 Aqua in Wonderland

インターネットで発見してどうしても行ってみたかったウォーキングコースがあります。それはナバラ州にあるウレデラ川の水源「ナセデロ・デ・ウレデラ」。ついに車をレッカーされ、レンタカーを借りるはめになりながらも、なんとかウォーキングの時間は確保しました。所要時間２～３時間というコースですが、あまりの綺麗さに時間を忘れて写真を撮りまくっていたため、最後まで行かずに引き返すことになりました。ウレデラはバスク語で「美しい水」という意味。底が見える澄んだ水やターコイズブルーの池、滝。森林に囲まれたその水が織りなす情景はまさに絶景でした。

I was eager to try one walk, which I found out about on the internet. Our car finally screamed out for help and was taken away by a breakdown truck. Although we ended up using a rental car, we managed to allocate time for the walk. It was beside Nacedero del Urederra, a source of the river Urederra in Navarra. Urederra means a 'beautiful water' in Basque. There was a series of connected pools and cascades in the wood. It was supposed to take 2-3 hours, but we spent so much time on taking pictures that we found we were behind our schedule and had to turn back along the way. The clear and turquoise blue was just extraordinary and unparalleled.

翌日はピエドラ修道院自然公園を歩きました。ピエドラ修道院は1195年に城の建物、城壁を利用して建てられ、16世紀に修築されました。現在は内部を一般公開しており、修道士の部屋はホテル部屋として利用されています。 

その自然公園にはたくさんの滝がみられ、素晴らしい景観を生み出しています。大きな滝の下の洞窟に入って滝を裏から眺めることもできます。公園内の池は魚や藻がくっきりとみえるほど澄んでいてこれまた素晴らしかったです。 

The following day, we walked in the national park of Monasterio de Piedra.The monastery was founded in 1195, reusing materials from a castle and walls, and was restored in the 16th century. It is now open to the public and its monk's cells are used as hotel rooms.

Surrounding the monastery is a lush park with many waterfalls of great beauty.We could go into a cave at the bottom of a big waterfall and saw it from the inside. There were lakes transparent enough to see fish and algae clearly. They were truly spectacular.

水が生みだす自然の造形美に驚嘆した２日間、どちらもわざわざ足を伸ばした甲斐がありました。

For two consecutive days, we admired the magical natural beauty formed by water and both places were worth a special visit. 

スペインの北海岸 The north coast of Spain

サンティリャーナ・デル・マルSantillana del Mar

イギリスのプリマスからスペインのサンタンデールに１９時間半かけてフェリーで渡りました。９月初旬でしたが気温は２７度。中世の街並みが残るサンティリャーナ・デル・マルに立ち寄り、石畳の街歩いた後、コミｰリャスという町で早速海水浴。水はぬるいとは言えませんが、この太陽が照りつける暑さの中ではちょうどよい冷たさでした。

We took a ferry from Plymouth, UK to Santander, Spain, which was a 19.5 hour journey. It was the beginning of September and the temperature was around 30 degrees. After we stopped in Santillana del Mar, a beautiful medieval town with cobbled streets, we went straight to a beach in Comillas. I wouldn't describe the water as warm but it was nicely cool in the sizzling sunshine.

その夜はコブレセスCóbrecesという小さな町のペンションに泊まりました。車で坂を下って3分の距離に小さなビーチがあり、そこでまたちょっと泳いだ後、ビーチレストランで夕食。シーズンが終わり客もほとんどいない中、海に沈む夕日を見ながらワインと美味しい料理。旅の最初にして最高の食事が楽しめました。私が頼んだのは「パプリカのシーフード詰め－おばあちゃんの味（みたいな感じ）」でしたがこれが大ヒット。今でも思い出したらよだれがでます。

We stayed at a pension in Cóbreces, a small town. There was a small beach a 5min walk away. After a quick dip there, we had a meal at the beach restaurant. We were almost the only customers there, as the holiday season had finished. So we had the privilege of enjoying a quiet time and seeing a fabulous view of the sunset. Nice wine, delicious food, picturesque outlook, it couldn’t have been better. The very first meal in our trip turned out to be one of the best for me. I ordered ‘Pepper stuffed with seafood -grandma style- (something like that)’ and it really satisfied me. Only thinking of it makes my mouth water.

ラレド　Laredo

翌日は北海岸を東へ向かってドライブ。まずはラレドのビーチに立ち寄りました。半円状に美しい砂浜が広がり、こんなにきれいなのに人で混雑しておらず、海水浴には最適でした。

車（今年４０歳のスポーツカー）の調子が悪くなり、ヒーターをつけてエンジンを冷やしながらドライブ。スペインの暑い日差し＆暑いヒーターにうだりながらも、海岸線の素敵な町やビーチを見ながらのドライブを楽しみました。

エラントコーベ　Elantxobe

The following day, we drove up the coastline to the east. Our first stop was at a beach in Laredo. The semicircular sandy beach was beautiful but not overcrowded, perfect for our swimming.

Unfortunately, we found something was wrong with our forty-year-old sports car and had to put the heater on to cool  down the engine. Although we were cooked by the heat of the car and by the  generous Spanish sunshine, we still enjoyed the drive on the coast, seeing charming towns and beaches.

 
３日目は北海岸のトップリゾート地、サン・セバスティアン（バスク語で「ドノスティア」）へ。有名な観光客あふれるビーチに行くのはあまり気が乗らないかも・・・と思っていたのですが、行ってみて正解でした。暑い日差しが降り注ぐ中、おいしいジェラートを食べてからから、次にバーでタパスと冷えたビール。こんな観光客の罠ならはまってもよし。そして、城の跡が残る丘を登り、美しい砂浜が広がる完全な円形に近い湾を上から眺めました。ここがなぜこんなに人気があるのかが納得できます。グルメの町としても有名で、主に魚を主体とした料理は名高いようです。残念ながら次の目的地に移動するため、その料理を味わう時間はありませんでしたが、すばらしいビーチで泳ぐ時間はなんとか確保。海も陸も短時間の滞在でしたが、「さすが、みんなが称賛するだけある」という場所でした。

On our third day , we visited San Sebastian (Donostia in Basque), the leading seaside resort on the north coast. I was in two minds about visiting the well-known touristy beach but it was certainly worth it. We started with tasty gelati in the intense sunshine, followed by appetizing tapas and a chilled beer in a bar. Those tourist traps were most welcome. Then we went up a hill surmounted by castle remnants, seeing a near-perfect circular bay with a beautiful sandy beach. The view explained why San Sebastian was so popular. It has a high reputation for Spain’s finest cuisine, largely based on fish. Regrettably, we had to miss it in order to get to the next destination, but squeezed in swimming at another pretty beach there first. Although it was a short stay on land and in water, I felt San Sebastian was a gorgeous place just as everyone had described it.

 

子宮頸がん検診のススメ An invitation to a cervical screening test

イギリス在住者はほとんどの医療が無料で受けられます（薬代は別。費用は税金で賄われています）。そして無料で定期的な検診も受けられます。病気が深刻化してから医療費全額負担するより、検診をして予防した方が医療費を削減できるというのが理由かもしれませんが、自分から検診しようという気にはなかなかならないので、ありがたい制度です。

UK residents are entitled to have medical treatment and some regular health screening, mostly, free of charge. (The cost is covered by taxation.)  It may cost less to pay for checkups than to pay for medical treatment after problems arise. It is a wonderful system as one is normally reluctant to do a checkup of one's own accord.

その検診の一つとして、25～49歳女性は３年に１度、50～64歳女性は５年に１度、子宮頸部チェックがあります。先日、私はその検査で、細胞の異常が発見され、子宮頸がんに発展する可能性があるということで、その部分を除去するという処置を行うことになりました。

In the UK, women aged between 25 and 49 are invited for cervical screening tests every three years and women aged between 50 and 64, every five years. My recent checkup showed that there were abnormal cells. Consequently, it was decided to remove them as there was a possibility of them becoming cancerous.

私　Me

がんに成長するには通常5～15年くらいの年月がかかるそうです。日本に行く少し前ですでに航空券など予約済みだったので、「処置後は出血が１カ月位あるから帰ってきてからにしよう」ということになりました。なのでイギリスの我が家に戻った翌日病院へ。処置自体たった30分で、局部麻酔で痛みもなし。処置後そのまま解放されて自宅に帰りました。出血は重い生理の時くらい出ると言われたものの、私の場合、実際大したことなく、確かに１カ月程出血は続きましたが、日常生活には支障ありませんでした。

It is said that it normally takes 5-15 years to develop cancer. At that time, we had already booked tickets to go to Japan, so the doctor suggested that I had the treatment after the trip because there would be blood discharge for a month. I went to hospital the day after we returned. The treatment itself took only 30 minutes without pain owing to local anesthesia. Then I was able to go back home straightaway. I was told that there would be blood discharge like having heavy period, however, it wasn't as bad as that in my case. Although the discharge went on for a month, there was no difficulty in daily life otherwise.

日本では子宮頸がん検診は、あまり知られていないし、お金もかかるし、ちょっと恥ずかしいのでなかなか受ける人がいないと思います。私自身もイギリスにいなかったら検診を受けていなかったでしょう。健康だけが取り柄の私が、この若さ（と言いたい）でがんの前兆になるとは・・・。がんって50歳を過ぎてから心配するものじゃなかった？？実は最近、子宮頸がんは20から30代で発症する例が増えてきているようです。

In Japan, the existence of a cervical screening test isn't common knowledge, it isn't free of charge, and one may feel it a bit embarrassing. Accordingly, not many women have it. If I hadn't been in the UK, the thought of having the checkup wouldn't even have occurred to me. I wouldn't have thought I would be in a pre-cancer condition in my youth (I would say I'm still in my youth) as I had confidence in my health. Cancer seemed to me to be something that we should start to worry about in our fifties. As a matter of fact, it is said that the number of women in their twenties or thirties who contract cervical cancer has increased recently.

子宮頸がんは早期には自覚症状がほとんどないそうです。女性の皆さま、ぜひ定期的に検診を受けて下さい。そして男性の皆さまはぜひ大切なパートナーの方に検診をすすめて下さい。

The sickness in its early stages seems to have no obvious symptoms.Thereupon, I strongly recommend the regular checkup to all ladies. Also to all gentlemen, I suggest that you send this message to your precious partner.
