Crown mines |
Cornwall was once the world's major producer of tin and copper. The region produced two-thirds of the world’s supply of copper in the early 19th century, having developed its mining technology. Now the 'Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape' is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not only are there numerous mines and buildings, but there is also a network of trails throughout Cornwall. Many of these closely follow the tramway and railway routes once used to transport ore and vital supplies.
Some of the trails are now revived for walking, cycling and horse riding. 'The Coast to Coast Trail' links the North and South coasts, stretching 11miles (17.5km). I have been cycling back and forth there. And I was thinking of running across some day. On my birthday I finally did it. Having completed the trail run, I continued to a pub, thirsting for a Cornish beer. All very satisfactory.
