There are mysterious pyramids, called 'Piramidi di Segonzano', the pyramids of Segonzano in Italy . They are not tombs but amazing geographical features created by erosion. Most
of these earth pyramids are column-shaped topped by a large boulder.
Owing to the top protection rocks, the earth below has escaped from
weathering and been shaped as they are, reaching up to 20 m high.
The pyramids are situated near Trento, northeastern Italy. The region borders on Austria and is amongst beautiful mountains. It would be only a rock maniac or a geographer who particularly visits the pyramids far from Japan. We are not rock buffs. The reason why we were in the region was to attend a friends' party. We had a most enjoyable time at the party but also enjoyed seeing various Italian places on this trip.
Again, look at the shape of the pyramids !! It's extraordinary that they stand erect like that.

The Ferrari Museum
The following day, we left the historical town, Siena and went to a modern high-tech attraction, the Ferrari Museum.
It is situated at Maranello, near Modena, about 100km north of
Florence (Siena is about 50km south of Florence.) Only fanatic Ferrari
fans would go there from Japan. I have no interest in F1 races or sports
cars myself but it's a magnet for men, including my husband.
There were
rally cars used for tours of China or India, as well as racing cars.
The photographic collections of the tours, showing for example a stylish
posh Ferrari running on a rural road with elephants, made me smile.
At the gift shop, the price of Ferrari minicars made me speechless. They must be toys for proper grown-ups.
A medieval city, Siena
Piazza del Campo
In medieval times, Siena prospered as a city state and once was a rival to Florence. Throughout central Italy, the town square was an expression of civic pride and independence. Siena's town square, Piazza del Campo, is one of the greatest in Europe and is also famous for the Palio, its traditional bareback horse race.
We went to a fortress, Fortezza Medicea, buit in 1560 after Siena was defeated by the Florentines. We found a wine shop run by a public institution, Enoteca Italiana where more than 1,500 wines from all over Italy are on permanent display after having been carefully selected by a judging committee. The staff said there are ten times as many wines produced in Italy. Astonishing. As for sake, Japanese rice wine, there are said to be more than 5,000 kinds in Japan, which makes choosing one, difficult..
The range of medieval buildings, Piazza del Campo and the fabulously decorated Duomo were stunning. Siena is out of the limelight in Japan behind the glory of Florence but it was a fantastic place in which to steep myself, as if I was in the medieval times. I wished I had been able to stay longer to explore.

The Amalfi coast and the path of the Gods
Maiori
Since I saw a preview of a Japanese file,"Amalfi: Rewards of the Goddess"on TV, the name Amalfi and the film's theme song, 'Time to say goodbye' by Sarah Brightman, had stuck in my mind. It became one of my dreams to go to the celebrated picturesque coast one day. Now it has come true !!
A cafe in Minori
Amalfi
Positano
Anyway, it was worthwhile. Thanks to our effort and the sunny weather, it was heaven looking down at the coastline and towns nearby, as if we were in the sky. I was also amazed by the terraced fields on steep slopes, on which grew vines or lemons. Although the stunning coast became one of the top tourist destinations, some traditional livelihoods still continue as in the past.

Ancient towns buried by a volcanic eruption - Pompei and Herculaneum
When Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, the nearby ancient Roman towns, such as Pompei and Herculaneum were engulfed by volcanic ash and pyroclastic flows. They have been excavated since the 18th century. The remains, which are peerless in the world, give us a glimpse of life in the Early Roman Empire, .
First we visited Pompeii, about 30 minutes away from Naples by train. It took us the whole day to walk around the town whose population used to be about 10,000. I would recommend you to go to the National Archeological Museum in Naples before visiting Pompeii. The museum stores many frescoes and mosaics in excellent condition which I could hardly believe were about 2000 years old. Incidentally, there is a secret room in the museum, which has the towns' erotic frescoes and objects. Pompeii's ruins would have been too large for me to walk through without getting bored, if I hadn't seen the museum collection, which kindled my imagination of the sophisticated lifestyle at that time.
The following day we went to Herculaneum, which was smaller and better preserved. There were some frescoes and mosaics left on the spot, which gave us a more vivid impression of the ancient civilized culture. It is said that Pompeii was a commercial town while Herculaneum was a holiday resort for rich Romans.
There were public baths for males and females separately, with a c
hanging room and pubs for serving wine and food with marble counters. There were also some dining places as it was not customary to have lunch at home at that time. The ancient city life looked little different to modern village life without electricity.
Later we also visited Oplontis, a villa near Pompeii. There were buildings with sumptuously decorated walls and floors, while there were areas for slaves where the service corridors were painted with black and white stripes.
The eruption must have been nothing other than a tragedy at that time. Nevertheless, because it stopped time in those towns, we could see their lifestyle 2000 years later. What an exciting experience !

See Naples and die?
Castle Nuovo
"Vedi Napoli puoi muori - See Naples and die." Since I heard of the saying, I hadn't felt like going there because Naples' beauty might make me feel I could die anytime. So I was sort of relieved when I actually went. It was filled with majestic historical structures and artifacts, but also riddled with rubbish and graffiti.
Naples was the capital of the Kingdom of the eponymous state which has existed since the 13th century before being annexed to the Kingdom of Italy, in 1861 which preceded the current Republic of Italy. Now it is the main city in southern Italy.
There is a rumor that the mafia is still behind the scenes. Compared to the developed industrial north, the agricultural south seems to have more problems of unemployment, poverty and crime.
Notwithstanding a bit of chaos, we enjoyed walking around Naples, a vibrant city, full of attractions. In the small walkable historical area, there were a lot of churches and the grand duomo. And in the streets, lined with stylish boutiques, there were narrow dim alleys where we could see apartment house windows and balconies with plants or the washing.

Furthermore, the food was superb. It was mid September and the daytime temperature was above 25 degrees. Inevitably we had gelati, delicious Italian ice cream, every day. Speaking of Italian food, we normally imagine pizza or pasta, but there are various meat, fish, and vegetable dishes as well. We became regular customers at a delicatessen and enjoyed their dishes with local wine every evening.

Golden Venice
In Venice, The Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) and Saint Mark's basilica (Basilica di San Marco) stand next to each other. The palace looked simple at first glance compared to the Basilica, which was rather elaborate.
I was staggered to see the Pala d'Oro, - the most valuable treasure in the Basilica. It is a golden altarpiece bedecked with about 2000 jewels such as rubies, pearls or sapphires. Napoleon stole some of precious stones but the screen still gleams. I cannot imagine how rich the nation was and how the people dedicated the fortune to Christianity. Above our heads golden religious mosaics were shining on the ceiling and also below our feet beautiful mosaics covered the floor. These superb things drew sighs of admiration. One was not allowed to take photos inside and hand luggage had to be left at a cloakroom. We were told that we should re-collect our luggage within one hour. However, there were so many treasures, it was impossible to see them all in one hour.
The Doge's palace is the official residence of each Venetian ruler, - the "Doge". It takes a minimum of one hour to walk around and there is no time limit. From a distance, the white Gothic building looked rather simple especially next to the basilica, but closer inspection showed its undoubtedly luxurious nature. Inside, there were many lavish rooms decorated with splendid pictures. Above all, the vast hall which was used as a meeting place for members of Venice's Great Council made me speechless. By the mid-16th century there were around 2000 members of the Great Council. Any Venetian of high birth, aged over 25, was entitled to a seat unless he married a commoner. "Paradise", by Tintoretto, one of the world's largest paintings was displayed on the front wall. I wonder how they could concentrate on the meetings in that huge grand hall.
The prison was placed next to the palace. There was a passage way that linked both buildings, which is called the Bridge of Sighs "Ponte dei Sospiri,". The view from the bridge was the last view of Venice for convicts before their imprisonment. It is said that they let out a sigh as they saw beautiful Venice for the last time.
Venice is famous for its glass art. In 15th century Venetians monopolized the market for high-class glass in Europe and the beautiful glass work was in fashion among aristocrats. It is said that the government confined the craftsmen and their families to Murano island to keep their techniques secret. There is no doubt that the gorgeous ornamental Venetian glass must have satisfied the nobles.
Venice, couldn't possibly produce its own gold and glass raw materials; however it became a wealthy nation with the aid of sea-borne trade, finally being able to spend money like the water on which it was built. I caught a glimpse of the golden age of Venice and sighed in admiration.

Watery Venice
After Florence, we left for Venice, the city on water. From the 6th century, people moved to the lagoon to escape from savage tribes. They knocked many stakes into the mud of the lagoon and built houses on them. The town eventually grew into a marine nation, building up a vast fortune by the trade with the Orient.
There are no roads for cars in the city so people use boats or walk. Nowadays there is a causeway which links the mainland to the entrance of the city, where there is a car park. We decided not to drive along the causeway but to get a train. It was as if the train were running on the sea, which was very exciting.
We walked to a hotel from the train station. The way was like a maze. We studied the town map, as we moved through small alleys and crossed several bridges over small canals. There are many towns which have canals in the world but it was the first time that I saw a town which had only canals instead of roads for cars.
The gondolas, are unique traditional boats propelled with a pole and are popular with tourists. They are like tourist taxis. We got on a ferry and saw Gondolas moving on canals, giving us the rich atmosphere of Venice.
It was out of the tourist season but there were still throngs of visitors. I heard that if the weather is cold and wet one can feel let down because the buildings look shabby and unattractive. However, I had never seen such an unique city so I was impressed all the time during my stay. I wasn't expecting to have wonderful, fine, weather as well.
I wonder how they maintain those buildings in water. The foundation stakes don't seem to have a long life. Also I wonder where the fresh water comes from and where the sewage goes. Venice was a mysterious city beyond my imagination.
It is said that the town would sink if the water level rises by the influence of the environment changes. I hope it will be preserved by some good watertight plans.

Tempting Florence

One of the pleasures of a trip to Italy is the Italian cuisine. As we were walking around in Florence in the morning, we found colourful and attractive food in showcases here and there, which was untouched and waiting to be eaten by tourists. I fell for the temptation of heaped assorted gelati and cornets stacked artistically. I was the first customer who broke those beautiful heaps. It was delicious.
Dolce)
Actually, I ate too much on this Italian trip. Food showcases and menus at restaurants tempted me to eat a lot. Let me show you a typical but surprising Italian menu.
1. Antipasto, appetizer
2. Primo piatto, first dish ; pasta, risotto, soup etc.
3. Secondo piatto, second dish ; main dish such as meat or fish
4. Contorno ; vegetable as a side dish
5, Dolce, dessert
What! After pasta, eat a main dish? How could I manage to eat it all up? For we Japanese, pasta is a sort of main meal. I had had enough with only one dish and a dessert. At restaurants they always served bread and Grissini,- long crackers - before the dishes. Normally Japanese people don't eat bread and pasta together. Furthermore, I was surprised by the size of the pizza. It was huge; the same size as a Japanese delivery pizza for 2-3 people. They eat it for one, as do small children. I wonder how they keep their weight down? I don't understand why Italian people aren't fat.
Too much carbohydrate. Honestly, I got fat during this trip. It was difficult to avoid because Italian food is so tasty.

Glorious Florence
We arrived in Florence in the evening after leaving Pisa. Florence is the city where the Renaissance, the artistic and cultural reawakening blossomed in the middle ages.
At that time, Florence became the cultural heart of Europe under the influence of the Medici, a fabulously wealthy family. They succeeded in banking and became the real political power in Florence. They also added much to the development of the Renaissance as patrons of many artists such as Botticelli, Michelangelo, or Leonardo da Vinci. I wonder how much wealth they had? It is surprising that later the family became the dukes of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the state containing Florence.
The historic centre in Florence, the old artistic capital, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and has plenty to see. We stayed near the centre and went sightseeing on foot.
First, we went across the Ponte Vecchio, which means the "old bridge" in Italian. It is the oldest surviving bridge in Florence, built in 1345 and has many shops lining the street on it. It was originally the domain of blacksmiths, butchers and tanners. After a time, they were evicted because of their noise and the stench they made. Then, jewellers and goldsmiths replaced them to suit the desires of the palace occupants near there. Now, jewellery and gold still sparkle on the bridge, as do the flashlights of visitors' cameras.

We visited the Duomo -Santa Maria del Foire Cathedral, which is the tallest building in the city. It had a distinctive huge red brick dome and the walls were richy decorated with white, green and pink marble and exquisite reliefs, which looked gorgeous, just like a palace.
The adjoining San Giovanni Baptistry is older and much smaller than the cathedral. However, the 13th century mosaics on the ceiling made a strong impression. The wonderful religious pictures was sparking gold and telling some stories. I felt comfortable in the small place and enjoyed looking up to the masterpiece, whereas, for me, the cathedral dome was too high to see the wonderful ceiling paintings.
The Baptistry is also famous for its east doors by Lorenzo Ghiberti. He was chosen to make a set of new doors after a competition that involved seven leading artists. It is said that Michelangelo dubbed them the "Gate of Paradise." The original doors are exhibited in a museum.

Florence is called a museum city without roof. Undoubtedly, there are priceless artworks everywhere. The square, Piazza della Signoria confirms the expression perfectly. It has many statues in the open air, including the outstanding "David" by Michelangelo in front of the palace, Palazzo Vecchio. It is a copy but still provides a grand sight. I saw the original in a museum. The height was 5.17m. It looked rather large without the palace background.
Florence has kept the splendour and hasn't lost the glory. It was a stunning glorious city.
