フランスのモン・サン・ミッシェル Mont-Saint-Michel in France

イングランドのプリマスからフランスのロスコフにフェリーで移動。パスポートにスタンプを押されることもなくフランスに入国しました。あまりにあっさり入国したので、あまり他の国に来た気がしませんでした。

We went across from Plymouth in England to Roscoff in France by ferry. I entered France without my passport being stamped. At first I didn't feel I was in another country because nothing happened at the entry point.

ともあれまずはイングランドの「セント・マイケルズ・マウント」を訪れて以来行ってみたかった、フランスの世界遺産「モン・サン・ミッシェル」へ。

We started for 'Mont-Saint-Michel', the World Heritage site in France, which I had been keen to see after visiting 'St. Michael's Mount' in England.

かつては干潮の際にしか渡ることができなかった島で、潮にのまれて命を落とした巡礼者も多く、「馬が駆ける速さ」で海がせまってきたらしいのですが、現在、陸路でいつでも通行可能。

Once the island could be accessed only at low tide. I heard there were many pilgrims who lost their lives when they were caught by the tide which comes in as fast as horses gallop. However now we can cross by the causeway at any time.

７０８年に小さな礼拝堂が建てられから、巡礼地になり、要塞になり、と歴史が一つの島につまっています。そして今やフランス観光を支える巨大アトラクション。実際息を切らしてのぼって上からの眺めもよかったですが、やはり遠くから見るシルエットは今なお幻想的ですばらしかったです。

An oratory was build on the island in 708, which then became a place of pilgrimage and later turned into a fortress. This island is stuffed with history. And now it's a huge attraction which supports french tourism. We walked up to the top, running out of breath. The view there was nice, but it was the fantastic silhouette which caught my imagination.
