コルマー ～リトルヴェニスと呼ばれる町～ Little Venice, Colmar

ルクセンブルクを後にして、フランスに入り、コルマーに滞在しました。フランスで「小さなヴェニス」（ヴェニスはイタリアの有名な水の都）と呼ばれる運河がある町です。
ベニスに似ているかはともかく、街並みはとても素敵で、歩いているだけで楽しくなりました。１６世紀に建てられた家々が保存、またはその姿のままに再建築され、お店、レストラン、ホテルなどに利用されており、きれいに飾り付けされています。日本人女性はみんなこのパステルカラーのハーフ・ティンバー（木造骨組みを外に露出させ、その間を煉瓦で埋めた様式）の家をかわいい！って言うと思います。

After leaving Luxembourg, we stayed in Colmar, France. There is a canal quarter known as Petite Venice, Little Venice. Setting aside from whether it's like Venice, the town itself was so lovely that I was delighted to walk around. There were well-preserved or reconstructed 16th-century houses and some of them were used as shops, restaurants or hotels and beautifully decorated. Japanese women would be charmed those pretty half-timbered pastel houses.

ルクセンブルク郊外へ The country of Luxembourg

午後、仕事を終えた友人達と合流しました。半休をとって私たちのために時間を作って、郊外の丘に建つ２つのお城に車で連れて行ってくれたのです。その一つがブールシャイト城。１０００年位前に建てられた石造りのお城なのですが、元々の歴史はローマ帝国時代までさかのぼると言われています。お城から見下ろす眺めは素晴らしかったです。この丘の上まで石を運ぶのは相当大変だっただろうと思います。

In the afternoon, we met our friends who had taken time off work to be with us. They took us to two castles built on hills in rural areas. One was called Bourscheid Castle, whose stone construction dates back to around 1000 and archeological excavations even traces back the history to Roman times. It must have been hard to carry the stones to the top of the hill. The panoramic view from the castle was fantastic.

もう一つのお城はドイツの国境付近にありました。内部を見学する時間がなかったのですが、丘の上に建つ荘厳なお城は遠くからを眺めるだけでも素晴らしかったです。

さらに彼らはそこからドイツまで連れて行ってくれました。私にとって、パスポートも見せずに、止まりもしないでヨーロッパ各国の国境を越えられるなんて本当に目からうろこの体験なのです。（その取り決めをシェンゲン協定と言います。ちなみにシェンゲンはルクセンブルクの町。）

Another castle was near the German border. We ran out of time to have a look inside but enjoyed the distant view of the majestic castle. Furthermore, they drove into Germany for me. It was surprising that people can cross the borders of EU countries without showing passports or stopping. (Schengen agreement).

さらに驚いたのには、その道はドイツに入り、曲がりくねってルクセンブルクに戻ってきたのです。引き返すことなしにたった５分以内にでルクセンブルク→ドイツ→ルクセンブルクを通過する道。・・・考えられません。

To my greater surprise, the road was winding over the border from Luxembourg to Germany and back to Luxembourg again in only 5 min, so that we came back to Luxembourg without returning the same way.

国境付近に住むフランス側の住人の中には、そこからルクセンブルクに通勤している人もいるようです。ルクセンブルクより安く住むことができるっていうのが一つの理由。東京とか大きな町で働く日本人には他県から長距離通勤している人もいますが、それと同じ感覚なんでしょうね。国境は越えませんが・・・。

I heard that some people live on the French side of the border and come across to work in Luxembourg where it is expensive to live. Some Japanese people, who work in a big city like Tokyo, commute long distances from the other prefectures, which might be a similar situation, even though they do not cross a border.

ルクセンブルクを堪能する A taste of Luxembourg

翌朝、友人達が仕事に行かなければならないということで、私たちだけでルクセンブルク市内を観光をしました。初めは彼らのオフィス街を見学。友人が彼女の職場である金色に輝く高くそびえるビルに車で連れて行って行ってくれたのです。地下の駐車場から建物の外に出ようと思ったところ、私は不注意にもパスポートを持っておらず、セキュリティーガードに出口までエスコートされる（させる？）はめになりました。さすがＥＵ組織のオフィス。セキュリティーが堅いですね・・・。

In the morning, we went sightseeing in the city of Luxembourg by ourselves since our friends had to go to their offices. At first we went around the area where their offices were. In fact, one friend took us to her office building, which was one of the two tall remarkable golden buildings, and parked in underground car park. Unfortunately I had left my passport at their house so we had to be escorted by a security guard from the car park to the exit of the building. Security is tight in the offices of EU institutions.

このエリアには多くのＥＵ機構がオフィスを構えています。黄金色の２つのビルを含め、モダンなビルが建ち並んでおり、さらに建設中の建物も見うけられました。ルクセンブルクは世界でも裕福な国の一つと言われています。たくさんの官僚がそこに住んでいるのが一因になっているのかも。

Many EU organisations have been located in this area and there are many modern buildings for them, including the two golden ones. It seems that more new buildings were being built. Luxembourg is said to be a wealthy nation, which may be partly because many bureaucrats live there.

市内には古い街並みも残っており、世界遺産に登録されています。ルクセンブルクは丘に建てた城を中心に発展した街なのです。そこから要塞跡や坂に建てられた家々を眼下に見ることができます。街はきれいに整備されていて、おしゃれな店やレストランが並んでいます。その日の晩はそこのイタリア料理レストランでワインと美味しい料理を堪能しました。

The old town has remained the town centre and is on the World Heritage List. Luxembourg was built centring around the castle on the hill. We saw the ruins of the fortress and houses built on the slopes below. The town was clean and tidy and has many posh shops and good restaurants. We enjoyed delicious food and wine at an Italian restaurant there at that night.

ワインといえば、ルクセンブルクは実はホワイトワインで有名なのです。私は一度も聞いたことがありませんが、もちろんこんなに小さな国ですから（日本の神奈川県くらいの大きさ）、生産できるワインの量も限られているわけです。ルクセンブルクに住む友人達はお土産にその貴重なワインをプレゼントしてくれました。いや、本当に美味しいワインでした。たぶんここでしか買えないですよね。

Talking of wine, Luxembourg is said to be famous for its white wine, which I'd never heard before. Of course Luxembourg is a such a small country, which is almost the same size as Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan, so they can produce only a limited amount of wine. Our friends gave us a couple of bottles of Luxembourg white wine as a gift. That tasted splendid. I guess we can only buy the Luxembourg wine there.

ベルギー経由、ルクセンブルク行き Luxembourg via Belgium

イギリスのドーバーからフランスのカレーにフェリーで渡り、ベルギーを通過してルクセンブルクに住む夫の友人宅を訪れました。道は単純に思えたのですが、ナビゲーションに失敗し、ベルギーの首都、ブリュッセルの中心に迷い込んでしまいました。ベルギーは３つ公用語があって、標識に書いてある地名が私には理解できず、ターンを逃してしまったのです。急いでいなかったらついでに観光を楽しめたんですが・・・。ともあれ、なんとか町を脱出してルクセンブルク、ルクセンブルク公国の首都に無事到着。ルクセンブルク市内でもまた道に迷いましたが。

We got on a ferry from Dover, England to Calais, France, and travelled to my husband's friends in Luxembourg, via Belgium by car. The way seemed to be straightforward but I failed in the navigation. Belgium has three different official languages so I couldn't recognise what signs said and missed a few turns. We ended up in the centre of Brussels, the capital city of Belgium. If we hadn't been in a hurry, we could have enjoyed sightseeing there. Anyway we managed to get out of the city and finally arrived in Luxembourg, the capital city of Luxembourg, although we got lost again.

その日は友人宅近くのポルトガル料理のレストランで夕食を楽しみました。メニューには肉よりも魚料理が多くて驚きました。ルクセンブルクは海に面していないのに。イギリスは海に囲まれているの割に、みんな魚より肉を多く食べているんですが・・・。
魚といえば、魚好きで知られる（？）日本人の私のために翌朝友人はスペシャルな朝食を準備してくれました。鯖のスモークとうなぎのスモーク。日本人は保存のために魚を干物にしますが、ここらでは魚をスモークにするんでしょうね。スモークのうなぎなんて初めて食べました。

In the evening, we went to a Portuguese restaurant near the friends' house for dinner. There were more fish dishes on the menu than meat ones, even though Luxembourg is a country without access to the sea. While British people tend to eat more meat than fish even though they are surrounded by the sea. Talking of fish, the next morning our friends offered a special breakfast, which was perhaps especially for me as the Japanese are known as fish lovers. I enjoyed smoked mackerel and smoked eel which I'd never had before. For preserving food, we Japanese dry fish, while they smoke fish, I suppose.

ルクセンブルクはロンドンみたいに色々な文化が入り混じった都市です。なんと市民の４０％が外国からの移民らしいです。ルクセンブルクにも３つの公用語が存在します。フランス語、ドイツ語、そしてルクセンブルク語。生徒は学校で３つの言語を学びます。今日では英語もプラスされたとのこと。たくさんの言語をどうやって覚え、使い分けられるのか、驚きです。学校で言語以外の教科を学ぶ時間が削られているのか、それとも学習時間がさらに倍増されているのか、疑問に思いました。

Luxembourg is a multicultural city like London. Surprisingly, 40% of the citizens are from abroad. I hear that the Luxembourger study three different official languages, French, German and Luxembourg at school. Nowadays they study English as well. I'm amazed how they can manage to use so many languages. I wonder if they spend less time studying other subjects or if they have to spend more time studying at school.
