散歩道 a walk

天気に恵まれ、すばらしい海岸線沿いを散歩していて、昔のＳｈｅｌｌのガソリン給油器を発見。"Sorry Sold Out!"（「すみません、売り切れました！」）と書いてありました。

Ｓｈｅｌｌつながりではありませんが、"Urchin Shell"（ウニの殻）が売っていました。いがいががない？種類が違うなの？と思っていたら、とげがなくなってまるい殻だけが残ったものだったんです。あのいがいがが、ちょうちんみたいにかわいい殻になるなんて・・・。

一番驚いたことは「犬のフン専用ごみばこ」が道端に設置されていたこと。
どうやって回収するんでしょう？
ちなみにイギリスで犬を飼うにはライセンスが必要とのこと。
でも犬を連れて散歩している風景をどこでもよく見かけます。
よっぽどイギリス人は犬が好きなんでしょう。
フンの後始末まで政府が考えているくらいですから。

I was walking along a beautiful coast on a sunny day, when I saw an unusual old-style Shell petrol pump, and on it was written "Sorry Sold Out!".
After that, I found urchin shells on sale on the pavement, although there was no connection between two kinds of shells.
I thought sea urchin shells should have needles so they might be a different kind.
In fact they were the shells after needles were removed.
I didn't know awful urchin shells changed to such cute ones, shaped like lanterns.

What surprised me the most was there were boxes for dog waste only.
I wondered about the later collection of the waste.
I heard it is required to have a licence for a dog in the UK.
Despite this, there were many people walking with their dogs everywhere.
I guess people in the UK love dogs, because their government even cares about dog waste.

イギリスのモン・サン・ミッシェル Mont-Saint-Michel in the UK

フランスのノルマンディー地方にある「モン・サン・ミッシェル」という世界遺産をご存じですか？
干潮時には陸続きになる小さな島に修道院が建ち、その美しさ、またキリスト教の巡礼地として世界的に有名です。

実はイギリスにも同じ名前（英語で）の「セントマイケルマウント」というものが存在するのです。
フランスの方は「修道院を中心に作られた街」らしいのですが、イギリスの方は「要塞のような住居の中に教会もある」といった感じ。
ノルマンディー公がイングランドを征服したのち、「セントマイケルマウント」は「モン・サン・ミッシェル」の所有になり、その指導で小さな修道院も建てられたのですが、５００年くらい後にフランス側からの攻撃にそなえて要塞に取り込まれたようです。

そして！驚くべきことに、なぜか、日本の鎧かぶとが展示されているではありませんか。
送り物らしいのですが、理由は不明。

それにしても、イギリス海峡を挟んで、同じような島があったなんて・・・。
軍事的な要塞になっていなければ、世界遺産になって、日本の厳島神社ともつながっていたかも？！（モン・サン・ミシェルとは友好関係を結んでいます。）
信仰の対象ではありませんが、風景は素晴らしいし、歴史の妙を感じました。あ、全くヨーロッパ史を知らなかったので、後で調べて感心したんですが・・・。私が行った時は道は海に沈んでいたので、ボートで移動しまいしたが、今度は歩いて渡ってみたいです。

Do you know "Mont-Saint-Michel", the World Heritage site in Normandy, France?
An abbey was built on the island which is accessible by a causeway at low tide. It's famous for its beautiful silhouette and as a pilgrimage site.

To my surprise, there is an island in the UK, named the same in English. It's called "St. Michael's Mount". While the French one seems to be a town centering on an abbey, the British one looked as if it was a fortress including a house and a church.
After the Norman Conquest of England, the UK island was granted to the French "Mont-Saint-Michel" and an small abbey was built by the French Abbot. However, about 500 years later, the abbey was absorbed into a fortress to counter an expected attack from France.

To my further surprise, there was "Sumurai suit of armor" displayed there!! It seemed to be a gift, but I don't know the reason why it was there.

Anyway, isn't it amazing that there are two similar islands in France and the UK, on either side of English Channel?
If perhaps, the island hadn't changed to be a fortress, it might have been a World Heritage site and had friendly relations with "Miyajima", an island in Japan, which has relations with "Mont-Saint-Michel".
Although I don't think "St. Michael's Mount" is a religious place at all, the scenery is wonderful and the history is interesting.
When I visited, the road to the island was under the sea, so I used the boat. Next time I'd like to walk along the causeway to get there.

ブライトンでの衝撃 Impressed in Brighton

ロンドンの南、海沿いの町ブライトンに一泊しました。
海辺のリゾート地として、また、ロンドンのベッドタウン（英語ではドミトリータウン）として栄えていて
素敵なレストラン、バーがたくさんあります。
そんなブライトンで、ひときわ目をひく建物、それがロイヤルパビリオンです。

タージマハールを彷彿させるタマネギ型ドームがあるインド風建築。
約２００年前にイギリス皇太子が作った離宮だそうで、中を見るともっとびっくり。
内部は中国風の装飾なのです。
シャンデリアに竜が巻きついていたり、竹に似せるために木に節をつけていたり。
驚くべきは実際一度も中国に行ったことがないのに、その皇太子がそれを作らせたこと。
アジア人として、ちょっと誇らしかったり、ちょっとミスマッチでは？と思ったり、どちらにしても素晴らしい装飾で一見の価値ありです。

今までブライトンなんて聞いたことない町だったのですが、このパビリオンと行きしなに見た
広告撮影風景（パンツ一丁の男が３人道路に立っている）とで、忘れられない町になりました。

I stayed overnight in Brighton, on the coast, south of London.
Brighton has flourished as a seaside resort and as a dormitory town of London.
There are many nice restaurants and bars there.
One of Brighton's remarkable buildings is the Royal Pavilion.

It's a building in Indian style, which has domes shaped like onions that reminded me of the Taj Mahal. The building was started about 200 years ago by a Prince.
I was more surprised at the interior decoration, which is in Chinese style.
There are dragons twined around a chandelier, wood made to look like bamboo by the carving of bamboo joints and color on it, etc.
More surprisingly, the Prince had never been to China but directed the decoration.
As an Asian person, I felt a bit proud that our ideas were copied although it felt a bit strange to me. However, it was splendid and well worth seeing.

I had not heard of Brighton before.
I visited the Pavilion and then I saw 3 guys in just their underpants in the road posing for an advertisement. Both these things made Brighton an unforgettable city.

仁川空港の利用法 How to use the Inchon Airport

韓国の仁川空港には、韓国文化を無料で体験できるスペースがあります。
空港に早く着きすぎて、うろうろしていると、音楽が聞こえてきました。
韓国の民族衣装チマ・チョゴリを着た女の人たちが、楽器を演奏していたのです。
衣装を着て写真を撮れる場所もあったり、国際空港として頑張っているなーと思いました。

先月末完成したばかり千歳空港国際便ターミナルはあたりまえですが、きれいでモダンな感じでした。
アイヌ文化の展示品は少しありましたが、空港に、もっと韓国みたいに文化の紹介、体験コーナーがあるとよいかも。

それをイギリスの友人に言ったら、
「イギリスでは今は文化、人種が入り混じっているからそれは難しいかも」とのこと。
確かに。
だったら、日本では案内ロボットをおいたりしたら、技術をアピールできていいかもしれません。
着物や刀、鎧をおいたら、「いまだにサムライがいる」と思われても困りますしね。

At Inchon Airport in Korea, there are places where we can experience Korean culture for free.
When I got there early for my flight and had to kill time, I heard music.
There were women wearing traditional Korean clothing, ch'ima chogori, and playing instruments.
There was also a place where one is allowed to try on their traditional clothing and to take a picture.
I think that they are trying something new as an international airport.

At the end of last month, New Chitose Airport international terminal was built, of course it's nice and modern.
There are some displays of Ainu culture, Ainu being the original inhabitants of Hokkaido.
I think it would be good if there were more places for the introduction or the experience of culture at airports like Inchon Airport.

I talked to a friend in the UK about it. He said,
"Well, it's difficult for us, because we now have many cultures and different people in the UK."
Indeed.
Then, how about putting a robot on duty at airports in Japan? It might show our technology and explain our culture.
If Kimonos, Japanese swords and armor were displayed, some people might think that the samurai are still alive.

韓国マクドナルドの真実 The fact of McDonald's in Korea

ロンドンにいくために、乗り換えで、ソウルで１泊。
うろうろ歩いていて、見慣れたマクドナルドの前を通りかかりました。
「２４時間営業、やっぱり都会だなー」と思った次の瞬間、目が点に。
なんとたくさんのスクーターが並んでいるではありませんか。
そう、デリバリー用なんです。
思わず写真をとるあやしい人になってしまいました。
「いくら買ったら注文してくれるんだろう。果たしてもうけがあるんだろうか？」
さすがに商品買ってまで聞くのはちょっと・・・と思って、その場を去りました。

後でネットで調べたところ、出前料金は無料で、いくらからＯＫ。
ただ出前用商品料金は少し割高（５０円ほど）のようです。
韓国のほか、エジプトやトルコ、台湾、シンガポール、マレーシア、インドネシア、タイなどでもデリバリーされているようです。
もし、あったら皆さんは頼みますか？

I flew to London via Seoul, so I stayed in Seoul overnight.
When I was hanging around, I happened to pass by a familiar McDonald's.
It was open 24 hours a day, just like other big cities.
Next, I was amazed, because there were many scooters lined up in front.
There was no doubt of about it, they were delivery scooters.
I couldn't help taking a picture of that, although someone might have thought I looked suspicious.
I was wondering, "How much do we need to buy, for delivery? Can it be profitable?"
I wasn't willing to buy something to ask about it, so I left there.

I looked into it on the internet later, it was stated that delivery was free, regardless of the price of the items bought, but the price of delivery food is higher than the normal price, by about 50 yen or so, in Korea.
Except for Korea, some countries have a McDonald's delivery service, such as Egypt, Turkey, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, etc.
Would you ask for delivery from McDonald's if we had it in Japan?
