ゴリシアフォールとチーズリング Golitha Falls and Cheesewring

ボトミンモアにウォーキングに出かけました。モア (moor) は「耕作に適さない丘」という意味で、荒涼とした丘が連なるイメージなのですが、ボドミンモアには素敵な場所がたくさんあります。今回はフォイ川下流のゴリシア・フォールを訪れました。

We went walking on Bodmin Moor. Moor means generally uncultivated hills, which sounds like a bleak area. However, Bodmin Moor has many attractive places to visit. This time, we visited Golitha Falls, down the River Fowey.

フォール（＝滝）というよりカスケイド（＝小滝、岩場を流れる段々滝）なのですが、木が生い茂る渓谷を流れ、コケの緑と秋の落ち葉のコントラストが幻想的で、ため息のでる素敵な場所でした。多くの写真家が訪れるのが分ります。

Rather than falls, it is a series of cascades and flows through a wooded gorge. The contrast between green moss and autumn leaves created an air of fantasy, which was absolutely breathtaking. No wonder many photographers are attracted there.

その後、トレヴィシィ・コイトという古代人の石室を見に行きました。約4000年前にどうやってこんな巨大な岩を積み上げたのか不思議です。

Then, we went to see Trevethy Quoit, an ancient burial chamber. It is amazing that ancient people were able to stack such huge rocks about 4000 years ago.

次に、チーズリングという積み重なった岩を見に行きました。昔チーズを圧縮するのに使われていた道具に似ていることからその名が付いたそうで、こちらは自然現象によってできたと言われています。

After that, we went on to see the Cheesewring, named after a press-like device which was once used to make cheese. It is said to be naturally formed.

伝説によると、昔、ここコーンウォール地方には巨人一族が住んでおり、キリスト教をこの地に広めるために来た聖人が巨人と岩投げ勝負をした結果できたのだそう。勝負はもちろん聖人の勝利。最後の一番上の岩は天使が降臨して持ち上げたらしいです。この絶妙なバランスを保つ岩はまさに神のみわざ？

According to a legend, long ago, a race of giants inhabited Cornwall. A saint who came as a missionary challenged a giant to a rock-throwing contest, whereby the rock formation was made. The saint won, thanks to descended angels, who placed the top rock. Those miraculous balanced rocks are just like a divine act of creation.
