スコットランドの首都エディンバラ Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland

西岸の島を離れ、東岸にあるスコットランドの首都エディンバラに着きました。エディンバラは中世の街並みが色濃く残る街で「プリンセスストリート」を境に南にオールドタウン、北がニュータウンときれいに分れています。プリンセスストリート沿いのニュータウン側のホテルに泊まったのですが、窓から見えるオールドタウン側の景色は丘（旧火山跡）の上にそびえるエジンバラ城をはじめとして、まるで中世にタイムスリップしたかような眺めでした。
また、ニュータウンとはいっても１８世紀に造られた街で、古い建物が立ち並んでおり、これまた風情があります。昔エジンバラに住んだことがある旦那が連れて行ってくれたパブ「カフェロイヤル」は１９世紀から続く古いパブで、宮殿の一室みたいに豪華な内装でした。

We left the islands in the west and drove to Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland on the east coast. Edinburgh retains some medieval buildings. The centre of Edinburgh is divided neatly in half by Princes Street with the Old town to the South and the New town to the North. We stayed in a hotel in the New town on Princes St. The view of the old town from our window made me feel as if I had been transported through time to the Medieval period. The view of Edinburgh castle on the hill, (an extinct volcano) was especially grand.
Moreover, although it is called New town, it was built in the 18th century. The atmosphere of the those times has been well-preserved. My husband, who had lived in Edinburgh, took us to an old pub built in the 19th century, which is called the Cafe Royal. The inside was gorgeous just like a deluxe room in a palace.

エディンバラ城はたくさんの観光客であふれていました。６世紀に要塞が建てられ、増改築されてきた（現存は１２～２０世紀の建物）このお城には、王権の表章である王冠、王しゃく、剣が収められています。王冠はイギリス最古（１５４０年）のもので「スコットランドの誉れ」と呼ばれています。

Edinburgh castle was filled with tourists. The original fortress was built by the 6th century, and present buildings date from the 12th to the 20th century. The crown, sceptre and sword, - the royal regalia - are displayed there. The crown is the oldest in the UK and called 'The Honours of Scotland'

お城では毎日（日曜日を除く）１時に時を告げる大砲がなるのですが、それ聞いた後お城を出て、この城とホールールード宮殿をつなぐ道、「ロイヤルマイル」を歩きました。歴史的な雰囲気あふれるその通りにはツーリストトラップも満載。バグパイプを吹く人、タータンチェックの衣服を売る店などなど。タータンチェックは軍服のスカートだけに使われていると思っていたら、店内には全身チェック服を着た展示が！伝統的に当時はみんなタータンを身につけていたそうで、家系によってチェック柄が違うみたいです。ただ全身に身に着けるとちょっと奇抜すぎる感じでした。

After listening to the booming of the 'One O'clock Gun' which marks one o'clock everyday except for Sunday, we left the castle. Then we walked on the street called the Royal Mile, which links the castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The historical street was full of the medieval atmosphere and tourist traps, such as bagpipe players, tartan product shops, etc. I thought that tartan was used only for kilts in military uniforms, but I found mannequins wearing tartans all over their bodies on display at a shop. It was a traditional material used by everyone in Scotland and each clan (family name) had their own pattern and colour. To be covered from top to toe with tartans looked a bit eccentric, honestly.

エディンバラでは、夏に有名なお祭りがあって１カ月以上もの間、多様なプログラム（ジャズ、オーケストラ、演劇、軍隊のパレード、コメディなどなど）が展開されます。そのプログラムはパンフレットではなく、もはや雑誌レベル。宿をとるのも難しいみたいですが行ってみたいですね。でもお祭り時期ではなくてもまたぜひ訪れたいお気に入りの町です。

Edinburgh has held a series of famous festivals in the summer which run for more than a month and various events are held. (Jazz, orchestral, dramatic, military tattoo, comic etc). The programme is beyond a brochure, a kind of magazine. It seems to be difficult to book hotels during the festival, but I'd like to see some of them one day. Not only for the festival, but also I'd love to visit this wonderful historical city again.
