ムル島 Isle of Mull

ターバットを後にしてオーバンからムル島に渡りました。ここでの宿泊場所は奮発して・・・なんとお城（グレンゴーム城）！バスルームは私が日本で一人暮らししていた時の部屋より大きかったデス。シャワーがなかったので、生まれて初めて湯船の中で髪を洗いました（日本人は普通湯船の外で髪や体を洗いますよね）。ベットルームも広くて素敵でしたが、なんといっても窓から見える景色が素晴らしかったです。羊が散らばる牧草地の向こうに海が広がっているのです。ちなみにその辺り一帯の土地は全部このお城の持ち主のものだそう。

We left Tarbert, drove to Oban and crossed to the Isle of Mull. We splashed out on our stay there, which was in Glengorm castle. The bathroom was far bigger than my past living space of the flat in Japan. There was no shower, so I washed my hair in the bath for the first time. (Japanese people usually wash our body and hair outside of the bath before using the bath for soaking.) I was impressed not only by the spacious gorgeous bedroom but also by the view from the window. The sea stretched out behind the sheep on the grassland. The whole area around there belonged to the owner of the castle.

お城の朝食は食器からして豪華な感じでした。ここでスコットランドの朝食をご紹介します。といってもほとんどイングリッシュブレックファーストと同じで、ベーコン・ソーセージ・卵・トマト・マッシュルーム。それプラス、スコットランド特有のもの、ポテトスコーン（じゃがいものパンケーキ）とブラックプティング（血のソーセージ）。ブラックプティングは苦手な人も多いようですが、私は結構好きかも。
また、イギリスでよく朝食に食べられているスモークハダック（タラ科の魚の燻製）やケッパー（燻製ニシン）もスコットランドの名物です。

The breakfast in the castle was splendid and the tableware was gorgeous. Now, let me introduce a Scottish breakfast to you. It is similar to an English breakfast, containing bacon, sausage, egg, tomato and mushroom. In addition, the Scottish like to add potato scone and black pudding (blood sausage). Black pudding doesn't suit some people because of its strong taste but I rather liked it.
Smoked haddock and kipper are local specialities, which are often served as breakfast in the UK.

さて、朝食後、お城の近くを散歩。牧草地にはスコットランド特有のハイランド牛と黒い顔の羊がいました。この肉牛、毛むくじゃらで顔が見えないんですが、なんだかかわいくみえます（キモかわいい？）。スコットランドの寒さをしのぐにはこれくらいの毛が必要なのでしょう。

その後また１台の車に乗り込んでドライブにでかけました。途中、２つのお城に立ち寄ったり、洞窟を見に行ったり。干潮だったので岩だらけの海岸を伝って洞窟までたどり着くことができました。

After a hearty breakfast, we walked around the castle. On the grassland, there were Highland cattle and Black faced sheep. These hairy cattle are an ancient Scottish breed of beef cattle. Their thick hair must keep them warm in the cold of Scotland. It also keeps their faces out of sight, which somehow looks cute.

Then we went for a drive in one car, visited two castles and walked to a cave. It was low tide so that we were able to walk along the rocky shore and go to the cave.

夕食は島の首都であるタバモリという町のレストランで魚介類を堪能しました。北の海の幸はやはり美味しいですね。港には色とりどりの建物が並んでいて素敵な街でした。

For dinner, we enjoyed seafood at a restaurant in Tobermory, the capital of the island. Products of the northern sea were good as it is in Hokkaido in Japan. There were brightly painted buildings lining on the harbor, which made it very attractive there.

その後お城に戻ると、ホールでクラシックのコンサートが開かれていました。入口から入ろうとすると、「今演奏中だから入らないでください。」と言われました。えー！？宿泊客なのに部屋に入れないなんて・・・。そこで、外で遊ぶ子供たちに聞いて裏口を探索。別の階段（たぶん当時はお手伝いさん用）で部屋に帰れました。優雅なクラシック音楽を部屋で聞けたし、裏口も探検できたし、得した気分です。

When we went back, a classical music concert was being held in our castle. A staff member asked us politely if we minded not entering until the concert finished. What? We were guests but couldn't come in? So we sought a back entrance and found it by being told by children playing outside. Finally we got back to our rooms through back stairs which in olden times would have been for maids. It was unexpectedly fun to listen to refined classical music in the room and to investigate the secret passages.
