トロヤとシャンパンを味わう Tastes of Troyes and Champagne

シャンパンといえば、フランスのシャンパン地方で作られた世界に名の通った高級なスパークリングワインですが、この度、昔のシャンパン地方の首都であったトロワを訪れました。高級スパークリングワインではなく、古都の街並み見物が目的。私は密かに味わってやろうという野望は持っていましたが。

 

Champagne is a world renowned, luxury sparkling wine made in the eponymous region in France. We visited Troyes, the former capital of Champagne, not for the fizzy drink but to see its historical townscape, although there is no denying that I had a secret intention of tasting some fizz.

トロワは歴史遺産であるステンドグラスで有名。小さな中心街なのに大聖堂の他、教会がたくさんあって驚きました。私が街歩きで特に感動したのは、ハーフティンバーの建物が隣とぴったりくっついて建ち並ぶ独特の街並みです。古い建物はなぜか真っすぐに建っていないものが多く、よく壊れずに残っていると感心しました。

Troyes is famous for its heritage of stained glass. I thought there were many churches as well as a big cathedral in the small town centre. What most impressed me was Troyes’ many half-timbered houses built right next to each other. Some of the old houses were far from level or upright. I wonder how they have avoided collapse?

狭い小路を歩きまわるのは楽しかったですが、3月末だというのに、かなり寒くて冷え切ってしまったので、昼食はインドレストランでカレー。カレーに合うかは微妙ですが、せっかくなので、シャンパンを食前酒に注文しました。小さいシャンパングラスで６ユーロ。本場でも高いものに

は変わりない・・・。私には他のスパークリングワインとの違いを述べることは不可能ですが、贅沢気分は味わえました。

It was interesting to walk along Troyes’ narrow streets but it was very cold which was unusual for the end of March. Getting chilly, we went into an Indian restaurant for a hot lunch. It was doubtful that champagne was going to go well with an Indian curry, nevertheless, I ordered one as an aperitif. One small glass of champagne was 6 euro, which was expensive as we were in the productive centre. Anyway, I enjoyed a luxurious feeling although I couldn’t tell the difference between the champagne and other sparkling wines.
