パンケーキの日 Pancake Day

パンケーキの日は、パンケーキを売り出すために考案された日ではなく、伝統的なキリスト教の行事です。

この日（別名Shrove Tuesday「懺悔の火曜日」）の翌日（Ash Wednesday「灰の水曜日」）からキリストの復活祭であるイースターまで４０日間（日曜日を除く）、Lent「大斎期」という断食（精進）期間に入ります。その間食べることを禁じられた、牛乳、バター、卵を使いきり、食べ納めをするために、「懺悔の火曜日」にパンケーキを食べるという伝統ができたようです。現在でも敬虔なキリスト教徒はきまりに従い、期間中、間食をしない、肉を食べないなどの節食生活を送るそうです。

Pancake Day is not a day invented for sales promotion but a traditional Christian event, which is also known as Shrove Tuesday. 'Shrove' stems from an old English word, 'shrive' meaning 'confess all sins'. From the day after Shrove Tuesday, called Ash Wednesday, to Easter, which is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, there is a 40 day (excluding Sundays) fasting and abstinence period called Lent. Pancakes were a way to use up any stocks of milk, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent, so people traditionally eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. In accordance with their rules, such as no snacking or no meat, some pious Christians go on an abstemious diet during Lent.

イングランドのパンケーキは薄くてクレープみたいな感じで、伝統的には砂糖をかけてレモンを絞って食べるます。また、パンケーキレース（フライパン片手にパンケーキをひっくり返して走る競争）なんかも各地で行われます。

友人によると、ドイツでは断食期間前にカーニバル（謝肉祭）があって、仮装パレードが行われ、パンケーキではなく、Faschingskrapfen（ファッシングクラプフェン）というジャム入りドーナツを食べるんだそうです。

イスラム教のラマダン（断食月）は日本でも知られていますが、 キリスト教にも断食（精進）の習慣があって、その断食を前に各地でお祭りが行われていたことは知りませんでした。面白いですね。

The pancakes in England are thin and similar to French crepes, and traditionally eaten with sprinkle of sugar and squeezed lemon. On Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Races are held in various places. People run with a frying pan and flip a pancake as they go.

A German friend says there is a carnival before Lent. They have costume parades and eat a Faschingskrapfen,  a jam-filled doughnut, instead of a pancake.

Ramadan, a fasting month for Muslims, is widely known in Japan, but I didn't know Christianity has a practice of fasting or there are carnivals in various places before the fasting period. It is fascinating to know many different customs.
